New Player - Question

So I'm just coming back to the game and I think I'm going to make a Void/Melee D spec mage, but I have a few questions that have been nagging at me for a while:
What kind of armor should a leveling mage wear?
Also, what item spells do I need to cast on my gear?
And last, but not least...Do I need to cast item enchantments on my shirts/pants if I've already got item spell enchantments cast on my robe (or covering armor piece)?

I cannot comment on the Void Mage template...perhaps someone else can  I would think a young, leveling mage could wear just about anything that is high al/possibly tinkered with steel.
You can bane ALL your armor...underclothes and all...with 8 spells. You just target yourself these days. Soooooooo much easier than days of old
