"Computer" originally meant "one who computes". For a long time, it was just a job description of an office worker who sat around doing math all day. Some companies would even have rooms filled with computers so they could divide complicated problems into chunks so it could be done faster in parallel.

Yup and then some dude tried and formalized the job of one such "computer", to be able to grasp it mathematically, and it turned out that model was good enough to serve as theoretical comparison to computers as we understand them today.
