Hire a band of assassins to take him out after he kills the other wizard, the rarest of poisons are a must for if he gets away. Burn, curse, and bury everything, then during the next month or so eliminate any villages or merchant shops you passed through in seemingly unrelated incidents. Anonymously hire thieves and scoundrels in every major city of man to keep an ear open for anyone asking about the wizards you killed, and others to spread misinformation.
Meanwhile, have mercenaries hired to kill all apprentices of the wizards. It's easier when they're less powerful and you don't want to deal with revenge years later. Whenever possible scapegoat a mob of villagers for it.

I found a gaping hole in your plan. I'm not going to tell you what it is, though.
The assassins get burned, cursed, and buried too. You have your wizard curse some gold in advance and use that as their pay, that way if they escape they die anyways.
