I know SSD's are fast, but I've heard they might not be reliable. If I'm gonna buy a new drive I want, above all else, reliability. I don't have the money to keep throwing at expensive fast drives that fail after two years. What brands are the most reliable? Are there any SSD manufactures that produce a drive comparable to the reliability of a well recommended hard drive company? $250 is my hard upper limit, but I'd like to keep it around or below $200 for 500+ GB

Intel for SSD reliability, but your budget won't get you a drive in that size.

If you can't afford $200 every 2-3 years for an SSD, then lol. edit - not to mention in 2-3 years they won't be $200.

I bought a Corsair 120 for $174(after$40 rebate which I sent in) at Fry's last week. Kind of needed it right then and there, otherwise I'd have ordered online. But I'd say it was a good investment and worth doing for your Windows drive.

You're not going to be able to find a 500+gb for a SSD at only $250, that's for sure. You're lucky as is getting one for a $1/gig

Just bought one of the 120Gb Intel 510 series for just over $250 on Newegg. Not as fast as the other guys, but rated high again and again for the fact it's reliable and doesn't die, or freeze.
Still moving/installing some programs as I did a fresh install and not just a mirror copy but man is it quick when booting and loading the programs that do run off the SSD vs the traditional HDD. Windows experience numbers went from 5.9 to 7.8.

I dont think its the price thats the problem its all the info that you loose on it. I mean really whats the point of buying a expensive ssd when your still required have to buy a back up for it? SSD's are non recoverable when they fail.

No storage medium is foolproof. The solution you are looking for is to backup your data, regardless of what you store it on for general access. Newer SSD's are insanely fast and I'd totally recommend getting one to boot your computer from and then get a bigger hard drive to store your extra stuff on if you need more storage. A good boot choice for "cheap": http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167050 As others have said, if you want reliable go with Intel when it comes to SSDs. For most purposes you want high read speeds and you can mostly ignore the write speeds. The only time the write speeds come into play is during installation of programs and moving around or saving large files. If you're a gamer that will occasionally do real work on their computer, then you can safely ignore the write speeds. If you do a lot of file manipulations like editing video then write speeds are a lot more important, obviously. A drive with stunning performance in both reads and writes: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167043
