Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Yesterday it was reported SOPA would be shelved for now and there would be no vote on it until a consensus could be reached. We figured maybe that meant it would quietly be buried in a hole and forgotten and the battle could then focus on the similar Protect IP bill. Regardless a number of websites, probably the largest being Wikipedia planned to protest SOPA and Protect IP by shutting down their websites on Wednesday for the entire day. Google won't shut down, but will have a special doodle and anti-SOPA link on it's home page. I think it's a bit much to shut your website down to protest, but that's just me. And now it turns out SOPA may not be eating dirt in a hole. But just taking a quiet nap for a couple weeks. It sounds like the real reason this is being shelved is because some congress folks are going on a "retreat" for a couple weeks. They say they'll work on SOPA again in February. Oh joy. Just give it up old guys. SOPA's name is mud. I don't think it will matter how much you neuter it, people will still be pissed off if it passes. Just put it out of it's misery and move on.

Don't worry. By the time our generation makes it into office, we will have effectively eliminated all copyrights, patents, and the other nonsense holding back innovation.

Wikipedia's black out is in effect. You can get to the website and it looks like all is normal. But when you put in a search, it takes you to the page, then a couple seconds later loads another page that makes you look up your congress man, then you can't do anything else.
Fortunately it's really easy to get around this if you use a script blocker like NoScript in Firefox or ScriptNo in Chrome. Blocks the script from redirecting you after searches.

I for one feel copyrights/patents are justified...but common sense is as well.
If someone could find out how to place a copyright/patents on Dandelions they would, then they would sue those that use them for money after they have been common place for years.
This is what happened a few years ago with MMO games that were around well before anyone applied for a patent on the process. Once issued, they started sueing the big names and getting paid.
So the latest craze is about the Martin Luther King ""I have a Dream speech."" For those that were alive and saw it on the televion, it was a monent in history that has since been plagerized by hundreds...not for theft but as a rallying cry and a gift to his legacy. But inorder to hear it now, they want you to pay $10. This is HISTORY!!!
Until we do a complete overhail of the copyright and patent system, this absurdity will continue. Its the laws and law makers that are making a mess of this all in the sake of preventing theft and priracy.

For the first time EVER... MPAA is worried about your freedom of information. LOL. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-57360499-52/mpaa-blasts-dangerous-anti-sopa-blackouts-as-stunts MPPA say they think folks shutting down their websites today are being irresponsible to the people that depend on these services and abusing their powers. They also mention they believe there is misinformation about SOPA being spread. MPAA's compassion and concern for my right to access information is touching. I think I got a tear in my eye.

Hit escape while the normal page is loading, stops it from loading the black out page.

A law or rewrite is needed BUT SOPA is not it. It basicly takes way peoples right to privacy by having every ISP spy on its users and report anything and all things they download or cut there ISP off. it also allows money makes to take anything down they dont like period just cause someone might have a logo teashirt on etc... it gives way to much power over the net and its corporations. Funny thing is they think it will make them more money but it wont lol, Asian cultures do most of the piracy and these bills cant touch them. As far as USA people goes? they wont buy anymore then they did before cause are econ is in the craper and we cant aford the games or movies anyway.

Seems like a lot of damage to security, privacy, and our reputation, for something that won't really work anyway. Like any government process, it'll take time to identify a pirate site, get a court order, and finally blocked on DNS and ISPs. Pirates could easily adapt by just rotating IP addresses regularly. They could do that far easier and faster than the government could block them. This thing is so bad, I can't imagine how it could pass in any form. They need to just keep their hands off, anything they do will just do more harm than good.

Then of course you get headlines like this: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/01/scotus-re-copyright-decision/ Supreme Court Says Congress May Re-Copyright Public Domain Works By David Kravets Email Author January 18, 2012 | 1:56 pm | Categories: intellectual property, politics Igor Stravinsky. Photo: Wikimedia/Library of Congress. Congress may take books, musical compositions and other works out of the public domain, where they can be freely used and adapted, and grant them copyright status again, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. In a 6-2 ruling, the court said that, just because material enters the public domain, it is not “territory that works may never exit.†(.pdf)
