A friend of mine did that once coming off of Ball Hooter at Snowshoe. The ski kept going and missed a ski patrol guy by inches before it hit a tree and shattered.

A) I'm fine, just one hell of a bruise on my right leg
B) It was such a wild wipe out that it took me 5 minutes just to collect all the various pieces of gear (skis, goggles, ski poles, one snow brake)

I dropped into a gnarly run not knowing how steep and technical it was... big mistake. I also went into a section with trees today for the first time. That was terrifying. Lessons are for squares, and people with dental insurance!

Trees are fun but frightening!
My worst run 'drop' in was at Vail. First day there, an ungroomed black diamond there made all of Tahoe look like bunny runs!
I made it down without taking my ski's off. But that was a hairy run. My advanced skills were not adequate.

last weekend I got caught up watching a PBS special about Austrian ski techniques and the ski phenomenon of the 60s-70s. It was really interesting.
I haven't learned how to ski but my wife is really up for getting my daughter trained at a young age. She had such a fantastic time growing up in Michigan with going to the mountain just about every weekend. so she wants that for our girl. As my wife's knees are wrecked its pretty much on me to accomplish the mission.
I might just throw money at that mission though

I was F&B director at Snowshoe back in the early 90's. The last year I worked there, 27 people died in ski accidents. Depressing as hell. Worst was a 9 year old whose idiot father took him down a black diamond slope. Weirdest was the 3 college girls who took an inflatable kiddie pool down the same slope. Naked at 3am.
Glad you just got a bruise and a great story out of your wipe out. Be careful out there.

Heh, skiing! Whee!
My very first time skiing I wiped out so hard I actually broke a ski. The rental office didn't give me a hard time though, apparently those skis were on their last legs and had been relegated to "first time skier rentals". I was fortunately in quite good shape back then and the million plus falls I took that day, including the bad one where I broke my ski didn't leave me injured at all.
Anyway, I became an avid skier for the next few years and then for whatever reason stopped skiing for about 12 years. At age 30 I stepped back into skis and for the first time in my life experienced fear. I had images of broken bones and the pain of them, and all manner of other things... I never had an ounce of fear as an idiot kid skiing, I was always too immortal for such petty concerns when I was 14-18 years old...
Glad you weren't hurt and now have a good story to tell.
