My mother planted an avocado seed in her backyard. The tree has grown pretty big (taller than the house) but no fruit yet! I think it's about 5 years old so should start producing soon.

Try Florida Avocados, they are lower in fat (and bigger) than the California/Hass Avacados. They have less flavor but you can add things like garlic, olive oil, salad, etc.

Avocado plants bloom better when there is another male/female plant in bloom nearby. If there isn't another Avocado tree in bloom with the opposite gender blooms then it is going to be tough for your mom's tree to produce fruit.

It's not even flowering yet, so I'm not sure if it's a pollination problem. Seems they just take a lot longer when grown from a seed.
Also, keep in mind that avocados planted from seed take anywhere from 5 to 13 years+ before they flower and produce fruit.
Thirteen years! Oh well, at least it gives her house some shade.
