There are several large posters around here in the halls with that posted and a large notepad below to write on. The thing I want to say should not be said because you would have to stand there and defend it because most people would take it completely wrong. What I want to reply with it, "It's just another holiday we should not be having to celebrate".

He was one of the most remarkable men in our history. He should be celebrated.

Exactly, and this is the very reason we have to celebrate his life. It would be much better if we didn't have to make a big deal of it.

It would be nice, but just 150 years ago we had slaves in this country based solely upon their skin color. The wounds haven't quite healed yet.

So let's keep talking about it every year to keep it fresh in everyone's heads. There's no way we should just let it fade into oblivion huh?

It won't fade into Skyrim when the side who was wronged still feels like it hasn't been righted.

I agree. We should bury our heads in the sand over all bad memories. Tear down the vietnam memorial, the marine wwii memorial, the Holocaust museum, find anyone standing in front of the USS Arizona and throat punch that old bastard for remembering Pearl Harbor, and any idiot caught with a rebel flag should be sodomized with the business end of a garden rake. I mean, if they're willing to even talk about and remember such horrible events in our history, they deserve it.

All people have come from a society that was used as slaves. Serfdom was a form of slavery and I know I am a descended from serfs. It's just that we're celebrating one of the most recent. And no one living in this country was ever a slave. When you go down south you see serious racism still exists. And that is why we need to keep things out there in front, to battle that. All I'm saying is that it would be nice if the racism no longer existed and we could let things go.

And as for the War Memorial, that's to honor those who died, not the cause of the war. Apples/oranges.

We honor Dr. King for his courage to stand up to the wrongs that were being committed against him and every other black person in this country. He stood up to people, the corrupt local governments, and the police who carried out the injustices. And he didn't do it by a violent uprising, he held true to the principle of forcing change via non-violent civil disobedience. He was remarkable.

For me it means continuing to work for the betterment of our communities and for humanity. He reminds me that we're the ones responsible for implementing social change. If you don't stand up for something that is wrong you are just contributing to the problem by allowing it to continue.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

Anyway, those of you who are applying King's teachings to a particular race are all doing it wrong. King just wanted all people of any race to be the same.

He did. But at the time, it was black people who were getting a raw deal. He wasn't marching for the grave injustices white people had to endure, such as being able to walk into the front of a restaurant and sit down and eat inside.

Go back another hundred years and you will find the Irish getting the same treatment. The only difference is they could overcome it within a generation.

Did I say they were slaves or did I say they were getting the same treatment. That was in response to the treatment you say blacks for well after slavery. Are you now trying to say anything after slavery doesn't matter?

Yeah, I know about the IRA but I don't think that had anything to do with immigrants here a hundred years ago and more.

I live just outside Memphis...it might as well be MLK day here every day as much as it is talked about.

Racism is still VERY strong here...and if you've ever played any games/read forums on the internet that weren't heavily modded, then you know that it's still strong.

the difference is that the irish can blend in with all the other white people...it's hard for a black person to blend in a group of whites who don't like them.

It wasn't the same treatment. They weren't slaves. They were newcomers. Big difference.

It was days off from school as a child. Later it was trips to the MLK memorial downtown (I grew up outside of Atlanta). Now it's days my son doesn't have to go to school and the laughs that I get from him bringing home awesomely colored supposed to have been black people pictures and him telling me that there's no school on Monday because it's King Junior day.

That state sponsored racism should not happen.
ie- sit at the back of the bus

I don't care what regular people want to do because I think racists are useless assholes that have low IQ's but still have a right to be racist if they so choose, however the Government has no business being racist in any way, shape or form.

Martin Luther King helped the United States with banishing most of the institutional racism, though I think a lot still exists.

I'm sorry your ancestors had to serve my ancestors, but I fail to see what that has to do with ME and YOU.

It would be nice, but just 150 years ago we had slaves in this country based solely upon their skin color. The wounds haven't quite healed yet.

and today, their descendants are not starving to death in somalia, are not being raped as a matter of course, most likely do not have aids, are not having aids babies, are not dying from malaria or dysentery or ebola, etc.. i mean i could go on and on. they need to get the fk over themselves.

So let's keep talking about it every year to keep it fresh in everyone's heads. There's no way we should just let it fade into oblivion huh?

and nearly all of them are something like 20% or more white. I don't remember the exact number, but blacks in the US are nothing like Africans, not only have the tribes mixed for centuries, but they mixed with the slave owners too.

Because the only way to get rid of racism is to stop seeing the color, and how are we supposed to do that if race is always brought up? The very thing that makes people proud of their heritage is the thing that perpetuates the problem.

it would be nice to see people as people.
but race has to be brought up for everything good and bad.

wasn't Dr. King a preacher of equality?
why is he always used as a preacher for minority advancement then?
