I'm gonna order a Samsung 830 64 gb one soon. I heard the OCZ ones have a high failure rate compared to Intel ones.

isnt that because of all the flooding over there in India? they say computer parts especially hard drives are gonna be pricey for the next year or so until they can reopen those flooded factories.

Ya, Philipines I think. Hard drives are not going to come down. They will stay high long enough for SSDs to become so close in price that there is no reason not to buy one.

I wanted one but to get a decent sized one you end paying a $1 a gig at least. for example The Old Republic install is 30+ gigs with all the updates.

I wish I had bit the bullet and gone with a 256GB sdd two years ago when I bought my system. Having said that, I have Rift on it and it's not that much faster playing than other games on the 1T hdd. The biggest delays are server related and there's nothing a faster disk will help with that.

Yep -- the flooding in Thailand late last year is making it tough for some key component of HDDs to be readily available. Good thing I don't need a HDD anytime soon. I did, however, just order this: Intel SSD - it's due to arrive Mon.

wow price almost doubled when I got my pc built back in nov it was averaging around a $1 a gig in price for ssd's. now $270 for a 120 gigs is nuts. and the shortage of cheap platter hard drives will just drive up the prices of ssd's, companies know this and will adjust their price point accordingly.

A couple of reasons why I am not caught up in the SSD craze. They're very expensive per gigabyte. (And contrary to the HDD industry holding out, HDD prices will come back down.) When they die, they're dead and your data is gone, period. So unless you're backing up frequently you are not going to be in a position to get data recovered. I don't measure performance criteria by boot times as I don't spend my time power cycling my computer. Once it is on for the day or week it stays on except to go into low power state. Their reliability is highly questionable. Their lifetime duration is remarkably short in contrast to HDD's. Program load times are a luxury, a program loading X amount of seconds faster isn't a break or break experience for me. Game data load times might be an issue in a MMO but I would much sooner resolve this by using a two HDD system where my games partition is on its own drive and the OS & storage on the other drive. It also doesn't matter that much unless there is a competition issue and load times are relevant. Where I like the idea of SSD is in a laptop for small power consumption and reduced weight. Again though, if you're using it for business or school and your data is critical then you have a serious consideration to contend with for potential data loss. Sorry to sound like a party pooper but those issues really put SSD tech on the back burner for my usage requirements & expectations.

Some SSDs are more reliable than others. IIRC the Intel ones are the most reliable and also most expensive. The OCZ ones are least reliable with the highest failure and return rate, they also happen to be cheaper.

Except your configuration, tweaks, browser history, site log in names, passwords, etc. You have to rebuild all that. It also depends on the type of programs you run. Well built programs installed to another drive should be unconcerned if they are launched on a new OS build as long as all the executables they need are there. Unfortunately there are bad programers who either don't care, don't consider it or actually want product lock in. Any of those force you to reinstall programs even if on another drive to get them up and running again.

Yes in your case this might work for you but considering how much time people spend on the web these days, a loss of site log in names and passwords to a person might be devastating if they didn't take precautions. Especially if they were intelligent about their name & password scheme which would mean that they would be using a different name and password for every site they need logged access to.

With all the passwords these days between work, school and home use, it's tough for me to remember them all and also unreliable to expect my browser to remember them all. I keep a separate word file with all my passwords on it for that purpose. Security is not that important to me though, just remembering the passwords/logins is.

Do you use FF? If so, you might like this. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/password-exporter/

I've had way more HDDs die than SSDs, so I'm unconcerned. Intels are rock solid. If anyone's all paranoid and sticking to crappy old HDDs for a boot drive, well then, they missin out.

this. I have OS and a few programs on it. The rest is on my old drive, and backed up on another drive. If my SSD died, I'd lose nothing.
yes this for me too. i do have alot of stuff on the ssd already, but i keep all "my important" stuffs mirrored onto a big external and also a platter hd in the same box.
Important stuff should be backed up anyways. With that said, if mine failed at this very moment I'd probably take it out and stab it repeatedly with a pen in a fit of rage.
