I need something to dump ashes into from our boiler, so something large like a oil drum would be perfect. Not sure if a metal garbage can would be sturdy enough to dump a lot of hot ashes into.

find you a couple metal 5 gallon buckets for ease of carrying.
fill up a 50 gallon drum or even a metal trash can and you will need a dolly to move it.
ashes are heavy, its basically dirt.

check local super bakery such as the ones that make mass bread and stuff.... they sell drums that ingredients come in for under 10 bucks a piece around here

try a local cabinet shop or a paint shot , you can get used 55 gal drums that had paint thinner
just be careful how you open it even though its empty it is like a bomb and the fumes alone can blow it right up if you don't take necessary steps to depressurize it before you try to cut the top off.
