Am I the only one getting sick of the crap fest that gaming consoles have become? My 4th 360 is starting to act up with the open tray error. The first 3 were replaced under warranty. This one is just over 2 years old and out of warranty. I went through 9, yes, 9 original xboxs all under warranty. I still have my original PS1, which still works after like 15 years. I still have my original Sega Genesis that still works. I still have my original Super Nintendo which still works. I still have my original NES which still works (and another NES that I got from a relative that I've fixed with a new cartridge connector). My original NES is 23 years old. All of my original units have the original controllers. My older units were played MUCH more than the newer. I've been through like 20 360 controllers over the years. I think my console days are coming to and end until they can produce something that isn't a piece of crap. /rant

My 360 got liquid spilled in it and went red ring. I stored it for a month or so and on a whim decided to reconnect it. It fired up perfectly. My PS3 had a similar experience except I tried firing it up after a month and it stilled malfunctioned. 4 months later though and it works fine.

Blame the damn treehuggers. We aren't allowed to used lead in solder any more, so electronic components are subject to random circuit failures after a few years. All the alternative substances have issues with crystallization, whiskering, micro-fractures, and other related problems.

My Xbox360 died three separate deaths over about 5 years. First a got the red ring, while still under warrenty. Then my harddrive failed, and then the second machine died again from the red rings outside of warranty. I refuse to pay for a new machine. Agree with the comments about console quality. If I still had my SNES I'm sure it would still be running.

PS3 is pretty awesome. Mine has been my regular use gaming console / Blu Ray / DVD player and occasional media server for a few years now. I take it out, clean the fans every once in awhile, put it back in and haven't had any issues. When it dies, it'll be replaced by another PS3 unless the PS4 is out by then.

Uhh, no!? Yeah some designers/manufacturers/plants had initial problems, now things are sorted and stuff is being churned out with good quality since over two years. That Microsoft is incompetent to make a working hardware product happen over and over is something on their head. You being an inverse envirotard doesn't bring anything to the table. Edit: My PS3 is still going strong after 3 years. Sure they have some flaky units too but nowhere near the Micro$oft fiasco.

I agree, my only issue is that I use my console for sports gaming. Football, basketball, baseball, and hockey. None of these titles are available any more on the PC platform. The downside for the console is that the company that has exclusive rights to that league usually puts out half-assed work.

They should make an official console emulator that lets you play all the console games on the PC. I might even pay good money for it.

PS3 could be better than xbox360 if they idiots monitored their servers so people couldn't blatantly cheat/hack in games. Especially in the FPS game like call of duty. Last time I checked no one monitored and idiots were running hacks all the time. I bought it and played for 3 days now its a paper weight in my closet thats only taken out when I want to watch a blue ray. Its worthless compared the 360 in that regard. Would rather take a chance on the Xbox for enjoyable content and risk a red ring or having to buy another.

They thought they had it fixed the first dozen changes too. Vote is out until crap actually starts lasting 40 years.

I suspect user error. My Xbox lasted for years, got replaced when I got the red ring and then I sold it when I traded up to a new black HDMI. No problems at all.

I bought a refurb one. It was a great decision...cheaper and it's never crashed in the past 3 something years I've had it. I know plenty of people who have suffered the RRoD, though, so I'm not even going to pretend that problems don't exist.

I got one RRod on my original xbox. I don't remember how long it lasted, but it was at least a few years. I haven't had a problem with the replacement they sent me. I like console gaming, but I think this is the last generation of consoles I'm going to mess around with.

Oh, 40, why not say 80, or 200? Fact is, you don't have any warranties lasting for more than 3 years anyway in general, and plenty of products using old leaded solder have failed over the years, albeit usually not for solder reason specifically. I'd say if they last 20 years that's double what you can expect at those price points, anything else is a bonus.

The whole problem with RoHS compliance is the fragile nature of non-lead solder. Non-lead solder is simply more brittle and susceptible to fatigue and stress fracturing. If this was the root cause of console failures it would be pandemic and wide spread across all consoles, and more to the point all electronics. RoHS compliance and reliability issues stemming from it are largely a handling issue with the solder paste to begin with. You can't handle lead free solder as carelessly as you did with lead based solder. Follow the handling instructions of the solder paste, tweak your reflow and wave profiles to match the melting and cooling properties of the new solder alloys and it's pretty much a non-issue.
