When I was younger I seem to remember Sears having a lot more quality goods and a better name. Now it's only half a step up from a K-Mart or Walmart. They're stuck somewhere between cheap big box and excellent quality - not a good place to be. Of course society's change from wanting (and being able to afford) quality and well built items versus cheap and disposable goods doesn't help. A washer or dryer used to last 20 years with good care, now I wouldn't be surprised to find they're made to last only 5-10 years. Everything's cheaply made to be more "affordable" and to keep up with trends, but in the long run it's more expensive. We've been duped!
