Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

B&N has officially unveiled the Nook Tablet. Successor of the popular Nook Color. The Nook Tablet has the same look at the Color. But now packs a dual core TI processor, 1GB of memory, and 16GB of storage. And still includes a micro SD slot. Appears to be preloaded with a number of apps, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, Showtime, Pulse, and Angry Birds. The display is still a 7 inch 1024x600 resolution IPS. Nook Color had "Vivid View", now the Nook Tablet has "Laminated Vivid View". There is no gap between the LCD screen and glass and they say this will cut down on glare. Price is $250. Available before the end of next week (some sources say Nov 16th). Sold at Best Buy, Walmart, Radio Shack, B&N, and others.

Nook Color price has been cut to $200. Not sure how long they plan to continue selling that, but no mention or hint that they are stopping anytime soon. Nook Simple Touch price has been cut to $100 (was $140). And no advertising (Kindle Touch at $100 includes adds).

Does the Nook run a heavily skinned version of Android, ala the Kindle?

Nook Color did and it sounds like the Nook Tablet will be the same. This means no Google apps, no Google Market. You'll have to depend on B&N's own much smaller app store. Or root it, and install the Google apps/Market.

Kindle Fire vs Nook Tablet. Quick recap of the Kindle Fire. It's a 7 inch IPS tablet with dual core TI processor, 512MB RAM, and 8GB of storage, without micro SD. Hardware specs. Nook Tablet wins easily. Twice the RAM, twice the storage, and expandable storage with a micro SD slot. Both tablets have IPS displays and I think both should look great. Nook Tablet might have an advantage by having the glass closer to the LCD to reduce glare, but we'll have to see if that's real or just marketing. Physical appearance. This is very subjective. But I personally find the Nook Color and Tablet to be kinda ugly and cheap looking. I don't like the raised plastic bezel that surrounds the screen. The color. Or the open gap in the lower corner. Also the Nook is half an inch larger in height and width. Meanwhile I really like the Kindle Fire (basically same hardware and design as the Playbook), it's simpler looking, black, flat front glass. But some people like the Nook Color's appearance. OS/Apps. Both tablets are running on modified version of Android 2.x. And neither will include Google apps or Market. Amazon has an advantage of it's app store is quite larger (though still much smaller than the official Google Market). B&N started with about 100 apps and is now up to 1,000. Amazon started with 3,800 apps. Can't find any info on how large the Amazon Appstore is now, but it is definitely much larger than B&N's app store. For streaming movies and TV shows, the Nook Tablet probably has an advantage of including Netflix. Kindle Fire uses Amazon's own Prime video streaming, which is growing fast, but still quite a bit less content than Netflix. Neither has a YouTube app I'm aware of, which sucks if you like YouTube (who doesn't?). Neither is a complete tablet experience out of the box. But for $200 or $250, both are pretty good values. You get more content and apps with the Amazon Kindle Fire. But you get more memory and storage capacity with the B&N Nook Tablet. Nook Tablet might be more enthusiast friendly because of it's better hardware and micro SD. Nook Color can boot from a separate OS off a micro SD card without even having to modify the stock OS, which is a really nice feature. So I think the Nook Tablet would be a great choice if you want something you can mess around with, root, add custom ROMs, etc. Even a simple root and loading Google apps will unlock a lot more potential in this tablet like it did with the Nook Color. But if you don't want to mess with it, just want a good experience out of the box, I think the Kindle Fire looks slightly better. But I think it'll depend on what you are using the tablet for, I worry about the Kindle Fire's limited storage capacity.

Well the Kindle Fire's big selling point is that you will mostly use online storage in the Amazon Cloud. So if one is to have internet access at all times, I don't see the low storage on the Fire being a big deal breaker. But it really limits your storage when you are traveling or on the go, where you may not have access to WiFi.
