WOW needs to consider older players and handicapped people whom want to play
|
I have found the expansion Cataclysm to be well designed for the handicapped with problems with fingers, hands and wrist. The idea of having Druids of the talon to pick up players whom couldn't master the stepping stones is a good example. As a senior 67 years young with rheumatoid arthritis, I was able to experience all the quest, including egg wave which was the most difficult to master. The expansion Wrath of the Lich King, with jousting in the Argent Tournament is a different story. For anyone with difficulty with their hands, it is near impossible to keep up with the champions. I have tried to master by practice and macro making to no avail. My grand-daughter, a young teenager had some difficulty in doing the valiant's joust and champion joust opening up the daily quest that I can do without the jousting. Thus the games developers should keep that in mind. A system of variable difficulty like the stepping stones for those who want the challenge and the druids of the talon pick up for those that couldn't master it, was well done. Seniors and handicapped people whom discover the WOW experience can certainly help to add to the player base.

There are plenty of things to do in WoW that don't require hand-eye coordination. I for one do not wish to see the game dumb down even more in the name of accessibility.

I have to agree. While I sympathize, the nature of the medium requires some coordination.

No. Playing video games is by it's very nature a skill that requires fine motor control and manual dexterity. If you can't preform fine motor control and manual dexterity to a reasonable degree I would suggest, perhaps, that playing video games might not be for you. Further, as mentioned, the market for seniors and video games is decidedly small. Easily the smallest age group they could market to; why cater content to this, the smallest of all possible demographics?

..... I suppose mouse-turning is out of the question..? You could always just hotwire a Wii controller, and tape it to a desktop oscillating fan.... (I achieved a 2600 rating using this method)

While I sympathize with your trouble(unless you're a fekkin troll ), one of my main reasons for leaving WoW is the "dumbing down" of the entire game. WoW is a shadow of what it once was. It was never difficult per se, but it was at least difficult enough to keep me interested. As others have stated, gaming is a hand-eye coordination, dexterous activity. That's part of the "challenge" of video games. I play games for fun, and for something of a challenge. This is how gaming has always been, and hopefully always will be. This is probably the reason I am beginning to believe Dark Souls is(one of) the greatest games ever created. It's hard as hell, at least was, and continues to be as I progress through the game. After completing an area I can go through it with minor difficulty again, but it's still not a cakewalk, I still must pay attention or die. So, without trying to sound insensitive, gaming is probably not something you should do as a hobby if you are finding WoW difficult. Or at least stick to simpler games, or ones that don't require a large amount of hand-eye coordination to achieve the desired results. I also love racing games. They can be challenging, but also do not require the dexterous movements of controlling a character. Provided you have a wheel. All you have to do is steer, and work the pedals

Remeber when hunters would kite by doing the 180 jumpshot thing? and feign death prior to dropping a frost trap? I liked the game back then. Everyone could play it but those who played it well really stood out. WoW nowadays is pretty sad.

Yeah. WoW's character controls is still one of the best out there. I used to do that Feign Death a lot too. Had a macro to just spam whenever melee got on me I actually used to kite Phantim from Ashenvale to Orgrimmar using the jumpshot(vanilla, he was a badass then) and let him wreak havoc. Ah, good times.

I can see his point being somewhat near the edge where you can have problems. Still I would rather not see content reduced to help people with disabilities. If you cannot do the hard stuff then don't do the hard stuff. Sadly I see a suit in the future. He have built a society where people just think about themselves and no one else.
