I currently have a Linksys WRT54GS flashed with DD-WRT it has been a great modem works with everything and never disconnects but I'm looking for something a little faster. I currently use the wireless part for one PC, streaming Netflix via Roku in another room, and steaming to a WDTV live in another room. The streaming from ROKU and WDTV is sluggish at times and is showing 3 or 4 bars of signal. What would be a good Wireless N router? I have shopped on Newegg, but from reading the reviews on Newegg, there doesn't seem to be a equally good N equivalent of the Linksys WRT54GS. Any ideas? TIA

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122334 If I were to buy a router right now, it would be this one probably. I have to say though that nothing seems as stable as my WRT54GL, or as well reviewed. Thats what has kept me using the WRT54GL.

Nice, I prefer tomato anyway. I'll have to remember this if I decide to upgrade. Is it bad that I have my modem / router / NAS on a UPS? NOPE Power goes out and I don't even notice haha.

I'm pretty happy with the Cisco e4200, which some claim is the successor of the WRT54GL http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124411 Of course it's not, but some say it.

Yea I'm a big fan of Tomato. As for the UPS, when the cable goes out, the internet goes out so I really don't have a need. I don't use the NAS feature, although I should. Stupid me.

Complete disaster. I ended up getting the Asus RT-N16 router from Newegg. Got it flashed with tomato and configured all my PC's, Roku, and WDTV, then two days later dead router. I'm not too happy with Newegg either, they charged $13.35 restocking fee plus $13.13 for return shipping. I used to sometimes pay a little more because of their reputation, but no more.

So it just seems like you returned it instead of contacting the manufacturer for warranty support?

Yes, from the reviews, many had troubles a few months later as late as a year. I didn't have a good feeling after taking it out of the box, it seemed a little cheap compared to the Linksys.

why would you pay a restocking fee or return shipping for an item that is broken? Any problem I've ever had...I call and ask for an rma...and they handle it with no problem.

I've had newegg waive restocking fees just by asking.

I did contact Newegg and they graciously waived the restocking fee. They explained their system automatically adds the restocking fee unless you call, email or chat with them online. I have done business with them for over 10 years and its probably been eight years since I ever had to return anything. I guess I jumped the gun a little and my confidence is restored in Newegg

This. Always call. Always. They don't usually return CPU's after they've been opened, but I called them and had no issue returning it (wrong chipset ordered) NO restocking fee, No hassles. Oh and as for the ASUS, sorry mate, but you'll always have a chance to get a lemon, regardless of the purchase.

Yeah, it was my fault I jumped the gun a little on the return problem. By reading the reviews on Newegg and Amazon it seems like there are a lot of lemons, not just Asus but any brand. If the modems aren't outright dying, they are plagued with random disconnects, poor range, overheating, etc. regardless price range.

^ Thats why Im still hanging on to my WRT54G, because an obvious replacement just does not exist based on reviews. Its like they all got together again and promised not to make a router that is as good as that one (with tomato anyway).

I'm going to stick with my Linksys for now too, but keep my eye open for an good N replacement. I'm not an EE, but the power supply of the Asus router that failed was very light and cheap feeling compared to the old Linksys WRT54G. It might be a coincidence but I think the router failed when I was moving a lot of files from my desktop to the WHS.
