For your desk or lap? Really, you shouldn't need one though...

sorry laptop and it sits on a desk. its 4 years old the last 2 its had heat problems when playing games the screen goes black and it basicly acts like its in perm stanby i have to power it down and back up. The cheap 10$ mat i bought 2 years ago worked fine for the last 2 years but the last few weeks the system been over heating again ( turn the mat upside down and blowing air into vents on the bottom helps with older games like wow and lfd2) but the new dungeon defenders over heats it in 5m.

Lots of articles seem to point to the NX Cryo, or whatever it's called. http://thisisoli.hubpages.com/hub/Top-Ten-Laptop-Coolers

Have you or anyone else made any attempts to repair the heat issue? Do the fans need cleaning or replaced?

Laptops do not have the dutycycle build for long session gaming. If you're mechanically adept you could possibly open the unit, clean out dust and replace the CPU heat-sink compound and other areas that may use heat pipe architecture (probably the GPU). Personally I would replace the unit with an actual gaming computer. It is likely that the unit already has heat damage unless it has an aggressive shut down system to protect itself with.

In my experience, I've found that these cooling mats don't seem to really make a difference. If you have the laptop on a flat hard surface and it's getting unobstructed airflow into it's vents already, a cooling pad probably won't improve the situation at all. Where cooling pads help are when you are using it on a bed perhaps, or if it's directly on your lap and a vent might be resting on your clothing. Or you just don't want a hot laptop directly on your lap. As for taking apart the laptop and replacing the thermal paste. This could be a bad idea. Some heatsinks may not use paste, but a thick thermal pad. If you remove that pad and use paste, the heatsink no longer makes full contact with the CPU and the situation is now worse. Then you'll need to find the correct thickness of thermal pad online and it's not easy. This was a lesson learned the hard way for me.

i've got #4 on that list, and for $17 i think it's worth it. i wouldn't spend $70 for the #1 on the list unless i was having some serious, serious heat issues. and even then i'd try to figure out how to FIX the issue and not just apply a bandaid.

I agree with fix the issue, and I do not really agree with getting a cooling pad for overheating issues. They are great for bed/sofa users though.
