Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Woman sues Facebook for allegedly violating wiretap law

The Register posted: A Mississippi woman has accused Facebook of violating federal wiretap statutes by tracking her internet browsing history even when she wasn't logged onto the social networking site. In a lawsuit filed on Wednesday in federal court in the northern district of Mississippi, Brooke Rutledge of Lafayette County, Mississippi, also asserted claims for breach of contract, unjust enrichment, trespassing, and invasion of privacy. The complaint, which seeks class-action status so other users can join, comes three weeks after Australian blogger Nik Cubrilovic published evidence that Facebook “Like†buttons scattered across the web allowed Facebook to track users' browsing habits even when they were signed out of their accounts.

Three weeks ago a hacker posts a blog detailing how Facebook cookies continue storing information about some sites, even after you log out. And we already have someone suing. Makes me wonder if this person even waited 24 hours before finding an ambulance chaser? My understanding of the situation is that Facebook cookies will continue updating information from other websites that have "like" buttons or other Facebook APIs, even if you log out of the main Facebook.com website. Facebook responded and I believe they were saying it's done for security and convenience. But they do not collect and store that information, it's just on your computer. Nothing seems sinister about that. Unfortunately this information about cookies, Facebook's new frictionless sharing feature, and a healthy dose of paranoia have combined into the fear that Facebook is tracking everything you do and it could get posted without your permission. Some web apps like Rdio, Hulu, and others can let you opt-in and share your listening and viewing preferences automatically on Facebook, this is the frictionlist sharing. Some people don't like it because it shares all your music and video watching without letting you filter it, but only if you actually opt into it first and you can opt-out if you don't like it. The cookie issue is definitely a concern if you are using public computers and login to Facebook. But again, there is always a concern about any authentication being done on public computers, and clearing your cookies will help with the Facebook concern (so long as the public computer isn't infected with a keylogger or malware). The FTC is looking into that matter and I think that's fair and good. But I think the class-action lawsuit is WAY premature and really just frivolous at this point.

So what happens if you NEVER click 'Like' anywhere, on any page? Are you still tracked if you log into Facebook, then cruise around on other web pages?

I think it depends on what you define as "track". It sounds like it's using cookies, even if you don't use the Facebook "like" buttons. The website includes the Facebook API into the page and these often use cookies just for loading the page. When you load an web page, you are basically running a program on your computer and the cookies are like configuration files that store information the program needs. This is routine and normal to me. Facebook could easily pull the information and store it and I imagine we wouldn't know. This would be tracking to me and is no doubt what people are very concerned about and rightfully so. But at the moment, not sure we know if that is actually happening and Facebook is saying it isn't.

I don't know how I feel about Facebook integration. On one hand, I trust Facebook more than the average no-name website, so at times, I like being able to simply log in without creating an account so that I can post a few comments to a news article, or whatever. On the other hand, there is that inherent problem about putting all your security eggs in one basket.
