So, there was a massive power outage in San Diego today, and nobody outside of California seems to even know it happened. The outage went from Mexico up to Los Angeles, and from the ocean into Arizona. Some 3 million people lost power for at least 10 hours, and several hundred thousand still don't have power as I type this, more than 12 hours after it's happened. It was one of the hottest days of the summer, if not the hottest (It was just over 100 degrees at my house). New York had a black out, and the world went nuts, so I'm curious why nobody pays attention to the west coast? This shut down gas stations, stores, schools, traffic, etc. The entire county shut down and was at a stand still business or commute wise. I've asked a couple people outside of the area if they heard about it, and they had no clue! It sure feels like there's a major east coast bias when it comes to news sometimes. The best part, is the outage was caused by one guy doing "maintenance" in Arizona. He shut out power for several hundred miles, and a couple million people. I wonder how he feels.

It's not cold. Therefor the power outage is only an inconvenience. Even if it is cold, it only matters after many hours when pipes start freezing. Anyone who dies of heat/cold exposure inside a house was probably days away from drowning in a bowl of soup anyway. Edit: And it's the giant front-page headline on the first news site I looked at.

I can put clothes and blankets on to warm up. I can't cool down without electricity. 100+ degree temperature is no joke. Besides, the NY outage was caused due to heat, which is what I'm comparing this to. The traffic was so bad, that people just pulled over and sat in parking lots for 3+ hours. All of the gas stations were closed, so if you didn't have enough gas to get home, you were screwed. We drove past one gas station working on generators, and there were 50 cars in line for gas. You'd be surprised how dependent we are on electricity as a society. I sure was. Everything was closed, and I mean everything. They don't expect full power back in San Diego until sometime Sunday. I'm just curious why this wasn't mentioned in the news nationally. I just went to Yahoo, and it was listed on the 4th or 5th page or news, right behind Orr's moose stuck in a tree, and George Clooney's ex talking about their split.

Stop moving. Wear less clothes. Drink more water. You won't be comfortable, but it's not going to hurt you as long as you slow down. And if you leave the AC off for a week, you'll be acclimated to the heat.

PS. I knew! Read on the electrically powered internets. Also, we're dependent on electricity as a society, and cars, but you can live without them if need be. It's just Americans panic when their lifestyle is threatened, even for a few hours.

Super heat has the same effects as super cold as far as death rates go. There is a reason it is mandatory to have air conditioning in places in the South.
Also, everyone knows that the East Coast is where truely epic diasters happen, everywhere else just need to get over it. I remember we got 24 inches of snow in 18 hours last winter, and when it dropped to -30 degrees with windchills in the -60s it was barely mentioned in the news, but once that weather got out east, where it dropped far less snow, and the temperatures were about 30 degrees warmer, it was an ecological diaster.

My issue wasn't that it was an emergency and we needed to panic. I was just peeved when I spoke to people outside of San Diego, and they had no idea this was going on, yet I remember it being shoved down my throat when NY's power went out. That's my only issue.

Can we get a cite on that? I could see AC being required in a restaurant kitchen or something, but not in a normal building.

I remember hearing about it when I was in Texas but can't find anything about it. I also can't find anything about Mandatory heat here in the WI, but I do know that it is the law to the point where the Power company can't shut off the heat here (the power and heat companies are the same here) between October and March for any reason, and I doubt that is the law down there.

Not true. At least not in New Mexico. There was no AC in several buildings around where I lived [Santa Fe area].

This thread also misses the most important point. The only place that matters is exactly where I am at any given moment, everywhere else is just lame.
