So my son needs to start doing research for school on the web. He's only 9 so I was wondering if any of you had opinions on filtering software to help me block porn etc...

Frankly I think it is always going to be hit and miss for that sort of thing with you having to play a constant whack-a-mole game of updates. I would probably start with Adblock Plus and Noscript for Firefox and put a master password on Firefox. I don't think there is a password for those addons however. On Noscript I would turn off the default of allowing top level domain scripts and set that per site. There is another add-on called FoxFilter that is specific for guarding children but I know nothing about it otherwise. Adblock Plus is good because it stops the computer from even contacting forbidden sites. (IE not a post processing filter).

This. Someone that young shouldn't be on the internet by themselves. Using firefox and adblock plus would be good for keeping him focused and any extra clutter, popups, or flashing banners from distracting him. You could also go to https://www.opendns.com/ - set your router to use opendns, and create an account. You can filter sites that way.

The I.T. guy at work used to limit sites by keywords through the router filtering function. It was very basic, rudimentary even, but it kept all but the most savvy away from undesireable sites and it was already available.

I do stand behind him and even what I thought was an innocent search term popped some porn before I had a chance to react. So F you and your high horse. To the others thanks.

i'd lock safe search on google, and only let him do searches there http://www.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?answer=144686 it's not foolproof but it will help a bit.

I just set up opendns for my girlfriend's son's computer. I have my pc's on a separate subnet than the wifi and his computer, so I get my dns unfiltered while everyone elses is filtered through opendns. I opened up a couple categories for him though, like Social Networking.

thanks, the tough thing is that he doesn't have his own PC. He's using the wife's or mine, so the google lock is nice.

http://www.internetsafety.com/ Gets a lot of air time on xm radio, though I don't have any experience with it. Best bet is to be there with him like some folks already mentioned.

InternetSaftey was bought out by McAfee.
It'll turn to a soggy turd in about 3-4 months.
