http://techreport.com/discussions.x/21555 Another Microsoft video showing a preview of the Explorer file manager in Windows 8. Main thing you'll see is the new ribbon bar interface. What I didn't see however are tabs to have multiple file locations open at once. Oh my god, what the hell is wrong with you Microsoft?

It's sort of funny but in the Linux community a lot of people are seriously unhappy with almost all of the desktop managers for where they have been going. Ubuntu pushed out Unity and that was roundly rejected with a lot of people opting to stay with Gnome 2.x (me included). Then you have a lot of people who hate Gnome 3.x because it is going in the direction of Unity. Then you have KDE 3 or 4 (I forget which) which has been rocky but showing improvement. Meanwhile what a lot of Linux fans have been talking about is a move to or staying with what is simple, lightweight and works in great classic UI fashion, LXDE. I think what it is, is that a lot of users are set in their ways and just don't like the contemporary attempts to rejigger things. And I agree with them. What might work for a tablet or whatever sucks royal backside for how you want to work on a desktop.

I've been wondering for a while why can't they add tabs to Windows Explorer, like the tabs in the browsers. Also why can't I cancel/skip the transfer of one file when copying/moving multiple files, without cancelling the whole transfer? All these OS devs seems to just make things prettier, and add drivers/compatibility to the OS, but not many features have changed that a regular home user can see since about Win95. What's so hard about actually improving the user experience? Devs really can't think of anything to improve? Because I could probably com up with at least half a dozen things that would improve the user experience off the top of my head. And they have been in Windows since forever.

What would be a win, is a lightweight customizable file manager. Let it default to less inclined user, but give power users and those set in their ways other options .

i saw that file manager but hoped it was going to be limited to tablets or whatever. the best explorer windows ever had was the win2k/xp explorer. they try to do all kinds of fancy crap but all people really need is the ability to get in and get the stuff done. you don't need libraries or ribbon bars or big ass buttons, no fancy fade effects or shiny junk, just a plain file manager window. i've tried the 3rd party replacements for win7 and they're all crap too. ubuntu was mentioned, and i hvae the same opinion of that. i dont' like the Unity garbage that they pushed out. i was on a serious push to move as much as possible into doing it in ubuntu during the 10.10 version but i can now see that my push has completely halted with the 11 version. yes i can use a diff window manager but there's still too much junk around. i could go back to 10.10 but my compulsive side would drive me crazy knowing that there's a newer version out meh

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.4 months ago, tried Unity for 20 minutes and then promptly set it to load Gnome 2.x and haven't looked at Unity since.

They are going to Gnome3 but I haven't heard about any limitation to pick which desktop you want. They would never get away with that anyway. Ubuntu while popular as it is could never withstand the onslaught or abandonment. Way too many *nix users have come out against the new GUI schemes. Also there is already a lot of talk about a Gnome2 fork. The dislike over the new schemes is just that intense.

i just wish i could figure out how to have a start button in the bottom left, time/date and running program icons in a dock on the bottom right and all the app windows in the bottom bar. i don't need a top bar and a bottom bar, it just wastes valuable screen real estate. all the fancy snapping of windows and crap is just that, crap. if i want to move a window over there, that's where i wanted it, not snapped to a freakin edge. lol. yes i do use the gnome2 desktop login option but i'm wondering how long that will last. would like to try other desktops as well but the amount of work i'd have to put into it is what's holding me back. i looooooooathe putting in hours and hours customizing something, only to have it break on the next OS patch or software update. i also don't want to have to use 5+ different apps to make the desktop look how i want it to look. just too many points of failure and too much to learn just to get what i want, looks-wise. easier to simply use windowsXP :\

For those who don't like the Unity look, have you thought about getting the last LTS? While it's older, it's still fine and away from the whole Unity deal. I know the next LTS is coming this winter, but no idea if they will go the new Unity look.

You don't need the last LTS, you can still install Ubuntu 11.04 and just pick "Gnome Classic" at the login screen.

Did you miss this one? (I know Ravy didn't post about it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi89CqBIrxo - Pause any file copy (even if it's a single large file) and resume - Multiple file copies merge into single UI - View of read/write speeds - Gone is the time esimate (always wrong), and now based on % complete and current speed of copy - Replace now shows thumbnails, and bolds whatever is different about the files being replaced in the target location
