Well this kinda sucks. Because is probably means Steve Jobs is having some health issues again. He has stepped down as CEO and requested that Tim Cook take his place. If memory serves me right I think Tim Cook has already been an interim CEO since before WWDC, so I guess now this is just becoming permanent.

He'll stay on as Chairman though.

If Steve Jobs is having health issues then I feel for him. Didn't Apple have some really tough times the last time Jobs stepped down?

Steve Jobs has had a few leaves of absence because of health issues, but don't think any really caused any notable problems for Apple, he usually wasn't gone too long. But if you are referring to that period from the mid 80s to mid 90s, Steve Jobs was fired from Apple at that time and Apple went to crap. He then came back and saved the company.

Was listening to a pod cast this evening and one of the guys was almost in tears pretty much sounding like he thought Steve would be dying very soon. I thought that was a bit creepy. Health is almost certainly the reason he's leaving, but it doesn't mean he's about to die. He's 56 years old, which isn't that old, but considering he's already battled pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant, his body had been through a lot.

Someone mentioned that Steve Jobs is a very hands on type of manager, he has many people in the company that report directly to him, he micro manages and is really involved in a lot at the company. That definitely takes a lot of energy and he may just not have that level of energy anymore. Hopefully it is something like this and not another serious health issue.

I'm not a big Apple fan, but I certainly admire what he's been able to accomplish with the company (twice).

I wish Steve Jobs well, he's clearly an inspiration to the company and a thoroughly decent guy. However, this change may not be that significant in that he isn't hands-on these days having been on a further period of extended medical leave since January. As Chairman he'll continue to provide the inspiration I'm sure, but it will be a less demanding role and one that he will hopefully remain able to fulfill for a good time to come. On the other hand I wouldn't blame him in the slightest if he decided that his personal family life was more important and chose to walk away to enjoy whatever retirement he can while able still to do so.

The man is a champion for coming back in the first place. His job must easily, and actively, consume 12 hours of every day, and with his health problems that has to hurt. (hell I am a lowly network engineer and I work 10 hours a day Mon-Fri and at least 2 hours on my days off)

I say he retires to some lovely European town and just enjoys his life, knowing he helped to move general use computing several magnitudes forward several times. This man deserves more praise than criticism, which is rare in his line of work.

Even though Steve was on a leave of absent, he was still highly involved. He still did product announcements and I would suspect he still micromanages the prototypes. The next few products are mostly set in stone at this point so they should be fine for the next year or so. However the stock will drop. Most investors are agreeing that you cannot really replace him.

Wish him the best really, he struggled through alot of health issues and stuck with it all. However, I will find much comedy in apple fanboi's crying over this.

Best to him, he has earned a comfortable (as much as medically possible) retirement.

My problem is not with him, but the zealots that worship him. There is no appreciable difference between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates yet the cult of Jobs demonized Gates for doing the very same things Jobs did. Their shameless hypocrisy is just a tad annoying I guess.
