GIGABYTE G1.Sniper LGA 1366 Intel X58 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-970 Gulftown 3.2GHz LGA 1366 130W Six-Core
CORSAIR HX850 Modular 850W Power Supply
2x CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600 Triple Channel Memory (12GB total)
2x EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5 (Running in SLI)

(for hard drives)
WD VelociRaptor 150GB 10000 RPM 32MB SATA 6.0Gb (for the OS's Win7/Ubuntu Linux 11.04)
WD Black 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB SATA 3.0Gb (I don't need alot of storage)

Is it really going to bog the system down ALOT, if I don't upgrade to a SSD drive?

SSD still isn't very cost effective so only get one if you have money to burn.

last i checked the spinpoints were faster then the raptors. but that was a couple months ago. they are definitely a lot cheaper.

ssd isnt that expensive. you might be able to get away with one of the small 30 to 40 gb drives, you only need to stick your os and intesive programs on it. if i was building a new system id definitely go ssd main and a 500 gb to 1 tb spinpoint for files and lesser programs.

Yea I'm looking at running Win7 and Ubuntu Linux off the main drive,
then I have the larger one for whatever I need to store (not that much).

I'd probably be fine with like a 128gb for the OS's. Might look into adding
that to the list of things, we'll see what money allows for.

I think i've decided to just upgrade a little instead of dumping $2000+ into a new system.

Currently have...
EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit DDR3 Video Card
ASUS P7P55D LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 Dual Channel Memory

Upgrading to...
EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5
BIOSTAR TPOWER i55 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws X 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 Memory

Just going to keep the same case, chip, psu, heatsink (dark knight), hdd. Hoping that the 3 new items will be compatible with everything I currently have. I think that will give me more than enough power to do what I want. Decided it just not worth it to dump so much money into another completely new computer for DAoC! Just upgrade this one that is already in my collection heh. Hoping that these new parts are quality, as I'm not a super computer genious lol.

I'd just like to add, 40gb SSD is way too small...I have a 60gb and I regret it badly and I only have Windows running on it and a few programs that I always use

Im in the process of seriously considering an upgrade myself. Ive planned just about the perfect system for $1k.
Getting the Asrock Fatality Z68 Mobo, 2600k CPU (Best cpu for gaming period right now), deciding between 16gb ram (100 on newegg now) or 8 and upgrading when I need to for much less $, keeping my GTX460 vid card since its still a beast, or might get another one and SLI for better performance than I can get from another card for the same price. I will be doing water-cooling finally though, which will let me overclock both the vid card and cpu ridiculously, thats how I justify water in the first place. Being able to surpass a $500 CPU with an overclocked $300 cpu is awesome.
I will be getting a better power supply though, need one if you want to get a good high overclock, cant have voltages jumping around.
Reason im getting 2600k instead of 2500k processor is hyper threading, figure it'll help when running a bunch of daoc accnts. Reason im getting such a good motherboard is for overclock reliability and the fact that I can upgrade to Ivy Bridge when it comes out if I feel like. It also supports 32GB ram, which I cant even buy yet happy

Also, DEFINITELY get a SSD for the operating system and daoc and whatever else you throw on it, then other harddrives for storage. Im torn between a smaller 60gb version and just upgrading later for less overall money once it fills, or a 120gb now for over double the price. I figure this new system wont have any troubles with 6, maybe 8 daoc clients (the latter prolly using /clientsleep). The SSD will have huge benefits for daoc, prolly not as much for Gaheris as rvr, but still...

Also, get 1600mhz memory isntead of 1333, get half as much to start and upgrade later if the price is too much.

Another edit: Reason im pushing for a cheaper build is to fight our tendency to go nuts ona 2k build that lasts for 3 years (my current setup). Getting a 1k build every year and a half uses less money overall (inflation) and you end up with better performance at every point except for the first year (which you wont even use the max performance anyway, you wont even use all the performance that a 1k system yields.)
