http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/windows-8-app-store-officially-announced-were-all-shocked/ Windows President casually let it slips that Windows 8 will have an app store. Engadget is shocked, but considering it's including tablet support I think an app store is a given. Linux and Mac have had pretty much what we'd call app stores for a long time now.

We all knew it was going to happen. Not sure why anyone was shocked...

Yeah screw buying boxes off the shelf. I'm totally sold on digital provided I can trust the retailer. Steam, Apple, Microsoft are equally as good as the Best Buys of the world.

A good idea for MS, but it might be a day late and a dollar short.

How so? Do they not still own the vast majority of the OS market? Digital distro is quickly becoming a preferred transaction so I expect to see more companies jumping on the bandwagon. With MS having such a captive audience with Windows it is hard to see this not working well for them.

Thats hard to say as the market has evolved into something different....
Apple owns a very large share of the Tablet / Computer / SmartPhone market when combined, and that is the market that Windows8 is now for.
Windows8 is a PortableOS that will be used on HomePC aswell.

Windows as a handheld device won't do very well. They've been struggling and they probably will continue (a la Zune). However, Microsoft owns the desktop market hands-down. Adding an App Store to allow you to upgrade Windows, purchase Office, or download things that Microsoft has previously been kept from including with the OS like Security Essentials, Movie Maker, et cetera, makes sense.

I think it was a couple of years ago, when they revealed this as a part of their long term strategy to make their software subscription-based, rather than buy-it-once. Office, Windows, and all will some day all require a monthly/yearly subscription to use... unless their plans change of course. Similar as what Intel/MS want to do with Computers - you have a terminal at home and you "rent" a computer in the cloud. If you want it to be more powerful to play games on, you pay more to unlock the power than if you want only a computer to browse the net on. Your data and programs will be accessible from any terminal anywhere, but people will be paying more on average than they are paying now. None of that "buy a computer for $700 that will last for 8 years" - more like "pay $20..30...60/month" to use a computer at home.

I do not think monthly subscription will really fly for an OS or for a PC. MS is not in hardware business and it would be bad idea to even try. Though, it is a fear that MS will start charging for Service Packs and selected updates. Which many people will not do then, thus causing alot of security holes to sit out there. It is human nature. You might also see a huge delay in going win8, since it took this long for many to give up on XP.
