Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Just bought a 1080p, 120hz, 52" 3D for my living room. Was wondering what the most visually impressive movies you guys know of on Bluray. I already own Avatar and Tron, got them on gift certificate prices so I figured why not.

I heard the remastered version of The 5th Element was a really good showcase.

Avatar is one of the most impressive "demo" blu-ray. I have 5th element too, but Avatar is WAY better. King Kong by Peter Jackson (the modern one) is also an impressive "demo" Blu-Ray. Some other nice ones are Blade Runner (old movie remastered, impressive), Star Trek (the recent one), Troy, Chronicles of Riddick, Sherlock Holmes. 300 is nice in blu-ray too, but be warned, the "graphic style" may not make it appear as impressive as others even though it is.

Only 120hz ? Nice, which set? http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=187 Batman - The Dark Knight Most of the animated movies from pixar etc.. Avatar I tend to like movies with actual IMAX shots, it then takes up the whole screen on those shots. If you want to really get picky: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342

Good point, forgot that one - Master and Commander is awesome too. Almost all sea scenes yet you don't get a hint of compression artifacts - image is crisp like a photography. And there's Beowulf too of course, which despite the "stiff" hand animations, is still the precursor of Avatar, and looks kickass on Bluray. Actually, here's my Bluray list, and the ones with "X" are those I'd use if I wanted to "show off" to a friend: X - 300 Adèle Blanc-Sec (The extraordinary adventures of) Alexander X - Alice in Wonderland (Burton) X - Avatar (Collector long version) Back to the Future I Back to the Future II Back to the Future III X - Beowulf (Director's Cut) Big trouble in little China X - Blade Runner (Final Cut) Braveheart Die Hard 1 Die Hard 2 Die Hard 3 Die Hard 4 Fifth Element (The) Dune Gattaca GI-Joe Rise of the Cobra X - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull I am Legend X - Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) (UK Bluray, high quality picture) X - King Kong (Peter Jackson) Last Samurai (The) Leon (The Professional) X - Master and Commander - the far side of the world X - Matrix X - Matrix Reloaded X - Matrix Revolutions Nikita Pitch Black (The Chronicles of Riddick 1) X - The Chronicles of Riddick (Director's Cut) X - Robin Hood (Ridley Scott 2010 - Director's Cut) Rob Roy X - Sherlock Holmes X - Star Trek Subway X - Troy V for Vendetta

Bumping this to add Lord of the Rings Trilogy (extended edition) and Star Wars complete saga to the list of "demo discs". The Pelinore fields battles in Return of the King or the opening space battle in Revenge of the Sith will make you have to pick up your jaw on the living room floor

Thanks. I ended up getting The Matrix, V for Vendetta, and 300 - they were all on sale at a local Target. Watched them all over a few weeks with friends, looked great. I'm getting The Lord of the Rings set next.

What did you get for your audio? Bluray is nice for video, but it's primary strength is it's audio quality... I have a bluray reader/burner but I am still waiting for the next thing to come out. This is a perfect example of how sony won the battle but lost the war...

Well, Bluray larger selling point is that more people can see the difference in SD vs HD then hear the difference between DTS and DTS MA. ** not that I don't mine lossless audio

We don't live in the same world then... aye, lossless audio is nice, but DVD quality compressed audio on most home systems doesn't make a noticeable difference. You need a professional audio equipment to hear it. The main attracting of Bluray for the vast majority is the kickass picture. Now of course, having at least a 5.1 system with it is and undeniable plus, but so it was for DVD already. You don't know home movie audio unless you tried AT LEAST a 5.1 system. PS: Heres a good site for Bluray reviews. http://www.blu-ray.com/ Yeah, that simple. What I liked compared to other sites is that the guys are able to literally HATE a movie and still appreciate its transfer quality to HD and its sound quality. They give 4 different ratings for each Bluray, movie, video, audio and bonuses. So they can (and often do) hate the movie, but give it a 5/5 in audio and video if the transfer is awesome, giving the fans of the movie a fair review of the Bluray disc. Basically, a guy there can (e.g.) say "I hated Avatar because the scenario is simplistic", yet give the Bluray a 5/5 Video and 5/5 Audio because of the amazing quality of the Bluray. They are professionals, not fanboys.
