Last week Blizzard Entertainment filed for a new Trademark - "Mists of Pandaria". Could it be the next expansion? Or, even more intriguing, their next MMO? What do you think?

Looks like Blizzard will be making a big announcement at BlizzCon. Their trademark registrations always appear a few months before BlizzCon. Remember when they trademarked 'Wrath'? I honestly can't decide if it's a new MMO or the next expac. I can't imagine they'd be announcing the next expac already but who knows? 'Pandaria' does sound a lot like what you'd call the homeland of the Pandaren Monks. :P Could be the next hero class?

The reason I put their next MMO on the table is the interesting tidbit that Mike Morhaime said at last year's BlizzCon. He said two things(paraphrasing): "The only thing I can tell you now is that it will be a new franchise unrelated to Starcraft, Warcraft or Diablo." "Next year you'll see a lot more info about our next MMO."

Yeah but "Mists of Pandaria" sounds very fantasy-based. I doubt they'd make another fantasy MMO to compete with their cashcow. It's gotta be the next expansion, especially since the rumor mill a while back was saying their new MMO would be a shooter, not an RPG.

Their next mmo is an fps based mmo. Pandaren doesn't exactly say fps to me.

You're talking about the company who created an expansion around space traveling goats. Why are Pandaren 'with lasers' so out of the question...

Agreed. Let's look at the expansions. TBC - 2 new races LK - Hero Class - Deathknight Cata - 2 new races Pand - Hero Class - Monk Now the question is... how is the monk going to function? People have been clamoring for a heroic healing class, and I'll bet this is it. A melee fighter with a healing spec as one of the trees, kind of like Runemasters but using healing power instead of arcane. Then there'd obviously be a dps spec, unarmed specialist to finally make full use of all those Fist weapons in the game that nobody ever uses. I'm also thinking there might be some kind of tanking spec as well, just like paladins having all 3. Drunken Master maybe? Lots and lots of wine to dull the pain? Who knows. But that's what I'm betting on.

I would say that this stems from the fact that basically it is somewhat safe to say that Cataclysm has been a disappointment for a good bit of WoW players. Probably due to this disappointment, both by fans as well as probably Blizzard themselves due to fan reaction and decrease in subs. Just look at this boards activity now compared to when Wrath was at its height. So I'm sure that plans have most likely changed as far as timeline. This could entail possibly shortening or cutting out possible planned Patches for Cata, to wrap up that expansion sooner than what we saw with Wrath. While pushing up the release of the next expansion, whether or not this is the expansion. Blizzard is well aware also of both TOR and GW2 releasing this year and sometime next year respectively for the two games. Unlike most previous games, these two games have a higher chance than others at succeeding in taking and keeping subs away from WoW Blizzard due to the nature of the games themselves, one being Star Wars and the other finally bringing a truly fresh change to the MMO itself. To drag out Cata longer than it needs to be when by all appearances and through community reaction of the expansion, it's least popular of the expansions released by them, would be folly, especially with threats of newer games already mentioned. So basically in order to try to keep people excited about WoW and to try to keep players, they need to begin showing the next expansion sooner than later.

I still think it's going to be at least a year until the next expansion. Again, this is going by past evidence of Blizzard's releases, in this case dates. They always tend to release expansions in Q4, or early Q1 of the next year. Make no mistake, they are going to milk Cata for all it's worth, as little as that may be compared to BC and LK. The development time needed to create the expansion is going to need to make a certain amount of money before they write it off, and I don't think that point has been reached yet. If and/or when Cata fails terribly, and subs drop below a significant amount (4 or 5 million subs is most likely within acceptable losses) they might, and probably will, push to release the next expansion quickly. Regardless, this isn't likely to be the last expansion. They still make too much money. Too many drones willing to submit pocket change for a poorly conceived expansion to a game beyond it's prime. IMO it's not an expansion that will revive this game. It's a combination of improved storyline combined with a total graphics engine overhaul. WoW has been outdated for a couple of years now graphically. The real problem Blizzard faces is getting their art team (who recycles textures every chance they get) to produce something new and exciting. After all, eye candy tends to draw more people than story. Witness the Transformer movies...

Aye. But then again, I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard's marketing experts would be doing whatsoever to transfer the fanbase to a new marketing model (provided this is not an expansion but a next-gen mmo). Considering the "Panda/Pandaren" thing, I know how cool they were for the WC3 fanbase but I wouldn't take that as a reason to come back to wow. New playable races are always cool but if Bliizard's dev staff stays on this weird course like with Catacylsm -- I'd give a damn about pandaren if I were you ^^. To be honest, the "Pandaren" in Dofus/Wakfu aren't that bad either ^^. edit: *rubs chin, conspiracy-shizophrenia-mode go* Let's not forget this could all be a TARP! They are using this to cover something else!

They are skipping a year on WoW as to not directly compete with D3. The pandarian expansion will ship Q2 2012. The leaked product slate already confirms this.

It is interesting that they may choose to go this route with Pandaren. I know China is very touchy about the Panda being used in any way, shape or form. Will this be a LK type deal where Pandaren will be something entirely different only in China? Like they had to remove all skeletons from WoW for China servers? To me that seems like a huge hassle but /shrug. It is their game.

That is circumstantial (IE shit happens). They have always been slated at a yearly release. 2 of the 3 were at 2 yes. The next is a year and the following is slated at a year.

WoW's expansion design gives them the ability to make the Cataclysm cataclysm go poof.
I'm very interested to see if they will take advantage of this opportunity.
Pretty big expansion imo. Two kind of duds in a row could hurt even Blizz.

Well here goes the thing WoW subs are down roughly a million players, 11.1 million according to its latest financial report. Now, when you had 12+ million subs and all of a sudden loose a million subs that is going to show up financially. Sure the argument could be brought up that it still has 11.1 million subs, still doesn't take away from the fact that for two quarters now, the trend has been a loss in subs, roughly 500k players per quarter. If the trend continues and the average stays the same, by the end of the year that would be 2 million players lost since Catas release. This isn't factoring in possible increase in lost subscriptions once TOR releases.

My thoughts exactly. I believe I heard someone say Pandas were going to be the race the first time around, but it was canned due to China. Hard to say who I remember saying it though... lol.

From what I understand, China will allow the use of Pandas, but you cannot depict a Panda actually being harmed. Which makes me think even moreso that they wouldn't be a playable race in the slightest, though quests might be pretty dull if I don't see any cute pandas in danger. Or something. Assuming its a WOW expansion. Sprawl's comment about a mobile game got me thinking.

So for China, they'll be bears or some shit, just like how China remodels undead and all skeletons.

I would think it would be easier to put skin on skeletons than change the lore of a particular race. Surely doable though.

They'd probably just color in the white fur with black and call it Mists of Bearia, starring the Bearren. Then it'll attract members of the Chinese gay Bear community, which I'm fairly certain doesn't exist.

There is no issue with playing or harming virtual pandas in China, its done even now in other games. What Blizzard screwed up was putting them in Japanese Samurai armor, needless to say the Chinese don't like the Japanese all that much

Oooh, thanks, good to know. Also found this on wowhead by a poster: "While depictions of violence against actual Pandas is illegal in China, violence against CGI humanoid Pandas is perfectly fine. In fact the movie Kung Fu Panda (which features a talking Panda getting the crap beaten out of him for most of the movie) was not only released in China without problems, but ended up being the highest grossing animated film of all time over there. As long as Blizzard approaches Chinese culture with respect, there's no reason why Pandaren would run into legal trouble over there."

Sure it does Spooky. Most of what you hear about nowadays isn't really their culture, it's the communist bullcrap that took over their culture.

It's amusing that some, and not only the usual trolls but also usually intelligent posters, consider Cataclysm as a failure. Most if not all businesses in the world, and not only MMORPGs, would be ready to sign a pact with Satan himself for such a failure.

Really Korrigan? So, if I cut your income by 8.3% over 6 months, you wouldn't say anything was wrong, you would just say "Well, many 3rd world inhabitants would make a deal with Satan for this check, so it's all good".. Coughcoughbullshit.

China was actually great and technologically way beyond us when we were still throwing stones at each other living in caves. Only western egocentric retards can think they are the best thing since the creation of the universe.

Then what was the thousands of years comment for? Chinese culture was alive and thriving up until one hundred years ago.
