PlayOn media server is an application that lets you stream Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, CBS, other online channels, and your local media content to other devices such as smart phones and tablets. Pretty nice for Android users that may not have a Netflix or Hulu app for example.
I tried out the service a few months ago. Had trouble using it on my main computer with the dual network cards and virtual machine installed, apparently the software does not work for spit if your computer has more than one IP address or virtual IP addresses. But on my other computer with a single IP it worked nicely.
At the time I decided not to purchase it because of the pricing and difficulties with multiple IP addresses. They wanted $40 for the first year and $20 for each year after. Or $80 for a lifetime account.
Well I got an email today advertising a sale. With the coupon code HEATWAVE, you can get $20 off the first year or lifetime account. So that's $20 for the first year or $60 for lifetime. However that year after price seems to have increased to $40 now. It seems they added some more channels to their service and now call it PlayOn "Premium" and no longer offer the $20 a year "Basic" service. But I'm thinking that $60 lifetime plan looks like it may be a decent deal.
I'll have to install the trial again and see if it will work on my main computer. That might still be a barrier for me using the service. But if it works this time, I think I might jump on this deal.

I have it there are pros and cons to it. I use it through my PS3.
Pros:
1.) I can watch Hulu through my PS3 without the cons of Hulu Plus (no restriction on shows).
2.) Makes a decent amount of content available through the PS3 without needing to go through a browser
3.) It has a nice scripting community which provides extra content, seems like it isn't really difficult to make them.
Cons:
1.) Originally I bought a 'lifetime' license for 30 dollars, they then decided any new content was covered under a new PlayOn Premium and charged me more money if I wanted it.
2.) You have to have it running on something, it isn't its own device, I hate having to have my PC on to watch shows through it on my PS3.
3.) When someone is watching something on it it lags the PC enough that I can't play games on it. Well, certain games, the mouse will stop moving for a bit every few seconds. This on a 2.4 ghz dual core with 4 gig ram.
4.) It doesn't have the ability to seek, this is a problem because sometimes it messes up and quits playback in the middle of a show, it used to happen quite a bit when both my PC and PS3 were both wireless, doesn't happen much anymore since I connected the PS3 through Ethernet.
Overall it serves its purpose, I just wish I had something better. If google tv wasn't being blocked by things like Hulu I think it'd be a much better product.

if you're just using it for your ps3, get ps3 media server. it's free and it doesn't lag my computer at all and has the ability to seek. (it gives you 1 minute jumps to pick from.)
if playon was it's own device or incorporated into the things google tv has bee incorporated into, it would be blocked by everything that's blocking google tv. media companies are RETARDED when it comes to understanding the amount of people that would like to use the interwebs to watch tv.

I spun up a VM, loaded it, and love it. The cool thing is it works with AppleTV. So basically I choose the show I want to watch on my iPhone (the remote) and it plays Airplay on my television. Glad I ditched normal tv a long time ago. Now even more glad cause I get some of the channels I miss back, like TV Land and Discovery.

They do have a 14 day free trial, but yeah, last day if you want to get the discount for purchasing.

I chickened out and didn't buy it. The frequent price increases and lifetime account charged upgrades scared me off.

Yeah that's what kind of scared me too. Since it's something I would be looking to intergrate in time rather than jump ship right now, doesn't seem like a good deal if they just change the rules when they want.

there's better, free options than play on. i was using it when it was free in beta and.. yeah. i'd go with tversity if i wanted to watch website stuff on my tv. i'm not even sure you need to pay them to access that part. though i suspect it's not something that works with ipads and the like.
