I saw this one 1) Caps are stupid and are not inline with reality. 2) He was a moron for ignoring multiple warnings and should of upgraded to business class at least or switched providers (not really an option for most) or something. That should cover both sides for you vyx . You still playing?

I don't mind caps if I have the choice to switch to some other provider. But the piece about Verizon having agreements in the area/giving up on it makes me cringe. I dunno about "multiple warnings" I thought it was 1 warning and then cut off for a year on the 2nd offense. I thought it seemed a bit harsh. p.s. Yeah I re-upped for the summer.

I suggest you price out Tier 1 bandwidth out here in the real world some time.
250GB a month is a lot of bandwidth, and as the article states he was doing a lot of stupid things that cranked that usage through the roof.
But a one year suspension on his account? Why not just cut off service for that month when the user hits the limit?

Wow, 1 year ban for going over the cap twice? Freaking harsh. The guy must be in an area without any competitive alternatives I guess. When a user hits the 250GB cap, the ISP should just shut off the service for that month, not go soup nazi on them. And I agree with him, it's silly these broadband companies are pushing DOCSIS 3.0, these higher speed services, but still keeping old caps in place. 250GB might seems like a lot when you have a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, but man that sure become a lot easier to hit once you get DOCSIS 3.0. I think I better ease up on my porn downloads though. Cox has a 250GB limit on it's Premium tier too.

I just checked my comcast email(even though it's a few days old) and found this amusing given the timing hmm different images. http://info.xfinity.com/Portal/content/Comcast/Local/SpeedIncrease/2011/07July/9388SpeedPerformance.aspx?

I have a DOCSIS 2.0 modem:
It ain't the modem. It's the person behind the modem and what I call "casual overusage". You torrent a lot, use online backup services, stream Netflix/Pandora all day every day and use the most bloated storage formats known to mankind for all of your media files - which is exactly what this guy was doing.
Edit: Just checked my own usage.
Apr: 146GB
May: 110GB
Jun: 89 GB
Jul: 52 GB *(so far)
... and you can sure tell I live in Seattle

he was prolly pirating a lot more than dr. who
but it is lame that comcast is the only high speed option in a lot of places and they don't let anyone else compete

What I was saying is that it's easier to use up that cap space when you are downloading at 50Mb/s than it would be at 20Mb/s. But I agree, it's not hard with a slower modem too.

While I think Comcast's handling of this is less than stellar he knew he was on a capped line and he also knew he was using a very large amount of bandwidth. Should Comcast have offered other options to him where the cap would not have been an issue, a definite yes. Should he have contacted Comcast for other options where the cap wouldn't be an issue, another definite yes. Let's call this 50/50 bad move on the part of both parties.

"But data usage is not very expensive for a large ISP. It's somewhere around 2 cents per GB of traffic sent to or received from the greater internet, and the prices keep dropping. " so 55$ out of the 60 he pays is profit before other overhead. ya i really feel for comcast. why we need competition

With 4 people using computers at home, I regularly exceed 250GB/mo. Uploading videogame play, watching other gamers' streams, Youtube, downloading free online games, downloading dame demos, game patches, online gaming, watching podcasts, facebook games, skype video calls, working from home.. it adds up. An average of 5-8GB/day is where it ends up. My highest was about 398 just a few months ago and 260-280 GB is the norm. Funny thing is, I have Comcast and have had them for over 5 years. They never sent me anything saying I am capped at 250GB/month. I have never received any letter/email/warning. If I do, then I can always switch to their business plan which is just about $8 more for the same speeds and has no cap. I agree though - caps are stupid. All these phone/TV companies needs to realize their old services are obsolete. They need to lay down fiber-optics and supply only fast internet, which can be used for TV/phone and internet.
