the game actually has a decent player base, there are 3 servers that are locked, one that is really close to it, and 2 to 3 others that have healthy populations. they were in the process of letting th eplayers choose which servers would be closed, which would have resulted in another heavy and medium populated server. the game is too complex to just merge like daoc. so i assume the game was fairly profitable.
edit: by locked i mean they are full.
the depth of the game was so much beyond anything else out there it initially was somewhat of a shock to hear it being shut down, as there really is no competition for it. but when it was noted in an interview by one of the heads of soe that the swg devs were being moved to a new project it became quite clear that they were just sick of dealing with lucasarts and plan on remaking swg without the star wars theme. i hope they do as there is nothing quite like swg, it is the ultimate sandbox mmo.
its not unusual for comments like quazis, but like most things in life if they appeal to the masses they are usually pretty bland. swg definitely wasnt for everyone, but i feel bad for those gamers out there that never really got to try it and see what they were missing.

By life support I mean that the player base is so small that it's barely worth keeping the servers up even if there is a slight profit involved.

when is someone put on life support? when they cannot perform the necessary functions on their own in order to sustain life, that is they will die without it. dont call me out for putting words in your mouth because you made a bad analogy.
in this economy most anything that turns a profit is considered worth keeping, so to say something is barely worth keeping because it makes such a small profit sounds ill informed and out of touch. honestly who knows what the profit is like at 15 a month it only takes 20k subscribers to break 3.5m in annual revenue. the cost of running 20k subscribers worth of servers, paying a handful of developers, and a licensing to la should leave a decent profit margin if managed correctly. so for most its quite apparent this has ulterior motives, swtor and soe is working on their own new project. lucas doesnt want another mmo with star wars and soe wants complete control of their product. i think lucas would have probably pulled hte plug even if swg had a subscriber base of 200k, they have way too much invested in swtor.

you are absolutely correct. because i like swg doesnt make your analogy bad. your analogy is bad because its not true, you dont understand what life support is and/or you have no concept of running a business.
there is no proof that swg was making a profit or losing money. that kind of information isnt going to be released. but a little logic wills how they were not putting money into it beyond a small group of developers, the cost to run the servers and licensing fees to lucas. you dont need 12m subscribers to turn a profit, since wow people assume that if you dont have hundreds of thousands of subscribers you are not turning a profit. when the fact is there have been plenty of mmos around for a long time with less than 20k subscribers. there are other things to consider as well. soe runs several mmos so aspects like billing, cs, forums, etc. so those costs are reduced when compared to independent mmos. then there is the tcg which has been generally accepted as a big cash cow. and finally when the license expired last time, the populations were considered lower, yet they moved forward.
just because you hate the game doesnt mean it is losing money.

im actually not upset by swg being shut down. im definitely not pissed about it, speaking of putting words into someone elses mouth. im actually pretty excited about the end of the world event and the game has really been fun now that everyone has gotten over the fact it is shutting down. the community aspect has ramped up dramatically and the swg community was actually stronger than the gaheris community imo, thats not to take anything away from gaheris but swg promots a community much more so then daoc. daoc is a combat game, swg was a crappy combat game with amazing social and community tools.
and yeah saying you hate swg and daoc was putting words in your mouth. but i think most people would agree that you do come off as having a strong dislike or disdain towards daoc and swg. right or wrong, that is how you are understood.

and yeah saying you hate swg and daoc was putting words in your mouth. but i think most people would agree that you do come off as having a strong dislike or disdain towards daoc and swg. right or wrong, that is how you are understood.
I don't hate or like SWG at all, I am just amused that it took this long for them to finally pull the plug. You can deny it all you want but when they completely revamped the how the game worked people fled in droves putting it into a 'life support' situation.
As for DAoC, I have very fond memories of how the game used to be but Mythic royally screwed over the way I enjoyed the game so yeah I'm a little pissed about it to this day. I really do still hang around here to keep up with the few friends that still pop on here every now and then no matter what you guys care to believe.

Sure I'm still a little pissed at what Mythic did to a game I used to enjoy, but really the reactions you see me have on here are all because the select few fools you see baiting and trolling me on here start in on me anytime I post here.
As for my dying comment I meant it in the terms of someone having terminal cancer and hanging on for a little while longer, not in the sense of everything is dying slowly.
It's not my problem if people can't tell the difference between someone who is angry all the time from someone who is highly opinionated and willing to defend his opinions. It's a common misconception that I see often. I'll say something that they don't agree with so they tell me they disagree and when I respond to defend my point of view I'm all of a sudden an angry and bitter person. I feel sorry for you if you are surrounded by people who never disagree with you about anything, what a boring life that must be.

You are pointing your anger at me, at saxona, and at PW. I know for a fact that mysekf and saxona are playing, and playing on this server (and we happen to contribute to the overall life of this server: ie. joing on every raid that is occuring while we are logged on). What, exactly, do you do to contribute to the life of the Gaheris server, Quazi?

By life support I mean that the player base is so small that it's barely worth keeping the servers up even if there is a slight profit involved.

The proof was so obvious I didn't think it was worth mentioning. How about them completely revamping the game when it didn't need it, pissing off a large portion of their customers and causing them to cancel their subscriptions? Or how about the fact that they are finally closing down all the servers?
If my opinion wasn't so true most of the time you might have a valid argument, but I tend to see things correctly most of the time so defending my opinion like it's fact tends to be the correct action.

Why would I have any reason to get along with the wastes of breath that are Gringor and Saxona? Pass is a cool guy who just likes to goof off and never seriously gives a crap about anything. Kobenator is pretty cool too, I even respect the fact that he defends his opinion about SWG. The first two though? Screw 'em.

I was sorry to hear that SWG had been canceled as I know that Kobenator played the game.
As for DAoC dying it looks like the RVR numbers have been pretty steady this year as well as the primetime population for Gaheris. There has been quite an influx of new, returning and RvR players on Gaheris especially in the last 6 months or so. While I have complaints about lack of new content and an increasing focus on the removal of PvE barriers to quick entry to the RvR endgame, I can honestly say that lack of people to play with is not really a concern of mine. The server simply does not feel like it is dying, there are still a large number of people logging on and finding stuff to do and people to hang out with.

Glad to hear it's holding off the inevitable for those of you who still enjoy the game. I may sound like I want it to die but that's purely a selfish desire from my disgust of watching the game get turned into something I couldn't enjoy anymore.

i played for 2 weeks while the soe servers were down but went back to swg as soon as it was back. daoc still seemed fun, but without my bots it just wasnt fun enough and with the bots i dont think it would have been $90 a month fun for how much time i can actually play.
as for swg, the two large game revisions were not due to losing players. they were officially done in order to balance the professions. if you never played swg, imagine if daoc you did not pick a class like warrior or eldritch or whatever. but instead you had points and you could mix warrior abilities and equipment with eldritch abilities and equipment and whatever. with 32 classes it took about a year for people to figure out the massively overpowered mixes. the developers tried tweaking things but it left some of the classes utterly useless and the overpowered mix just changed to something else. after the first combat upgrade they really didnt lose many players. in fact the game may have gained a smalla mount. the second combat upgrade called nge was slated as another balance change, and going from 32 mix and match professions to 9 do not mix professions does make it a hell of a lot easier to balance. but everyone knew the unofficial reason was lucas was furious that wow was so much more successful then swg. so they tried to copy wow and failed horribly. they gutted the complexity of the game, added instances, nearly eliminated player interdependency. they simplified the combat system and tried to mask it by speeding things up drastically, think diablo 2 combat but done horribly. rumor was they were going to release the game for playstation 2, which would make sense as it would have played nicely with a controller. but the droves of players leaving nixed that idea. at this time i would have agreed with you that the game was on life support. and it probably was for a year or two. but over time they brought back complexity, player inter dependency, character customization and many other things from swg past that made the game great. had the game been released as it is today people would be talking about swg instead of wow.
another big issue the game revamps attempted to fix jedi. jedi would be like having a class in daoc that could level up to 60 or 70. but you couldnt just start as a jedi it required a seriously long copmlex process to unlock. so it was limited to a few amount, but over time more and more and eventually it started to look like you needed a jedi to compete with everyone else. obviously this was a deterrent, who wants to a play a game that will take you 9 months to get to the same place everyone else is.

the first combat upgrade really wasnt that drastic and most of hte big changes were needed. they added levels to players, but they were almost meaningless. they took away the queueing up of specials. before you could queue up an infinite amount of specials and just let htem go. now you could queue up one. the standardized armors and damage types. initially the game seemed harder. previously to level you would join a group of 20 and everyone would go solo. the reason you joined the groupw as to make missions or spawns larger so you could get more experience. groups were reduced to 8 and it was a lot harder to do that, you needed heals now. it forded people to group up and play together. really not a bad thing imo. pvp was much better. before the cu it was all about dizzy+kd and mind attacks. most of those were given counters or made less effective so there was more strategy to it. still nothing compared to daoc which still imo has bar none the best combat system of any mmo. ofcourse you will get comments from bitter players who lost overpowered abilities or items that should have never existed, but you have to take certain things with a grain of salt. imagine if daoc had 30 dps weapons that were 1 in a million drop rate, thats not smart so they get rid of them. there was quite a bit of stuff like that that the cu got rid of.
really the first combat upgrade was not a change to the combat system, it just tweaked a ton of stuff. but the professions and combat were all still pretty much the same. now the nge was huge, it was like an entirely new game. everything was completely different. there was no semblance of anything left. and it was done horribly and it was done fast and it was done with out th eplayer base on board. it went to test and within a week people were saying this is bad youc ant do this even if we liked this system it is so bug ridden and horribly implemented it cant fly. it went live with only two weeks of open testing. after going live there were mass exodus of players. senators and players who were part of the closed testing let it be known that they thought concept was ok for nge but there was no way it could go live as is, but everyone was ignored. to make things worst they were working on the nge while they were working on a new expansion, the expansion was being advertised one way but they new it would not be that way since the nge was going live a couple weeks later. people were gearing up lawsuits against them but they quickly refunded everyone on the expansion. it will always be the worst fiasco in mmo history. and i think thats where people get stuck with the life support comments and that is why i call your comment ill informed. its been 6 years, a lot has changed. soe has publically admitted regret and said they would do things differently. the game is good now and has a thriving player base. sure its no wow and not even close but what is? the populations were actually very slowly increasing as people who gave it another try during a promo event or whatever stayed on realizing the game had come a long way and a lot of the things they enjoyed were back without some of the things that they disliked.

Well in that case I'll take back my comment about it being on life support. You've gone into the most detail I've read about the state of the current SWG. If I were to believe everyone else about the game it would still be doing as poorly as it was when the NGE was implemented. Since you've gone out of the way to explain how it isn't I'll believe you.

unofficial news leaking from soe fanfaire is that the decision by soe and lucas arts to end swg was not mutual and was entirely made by lucasarts. ofcourse has to be taken with a grain of salt as its not being confirmed and in these types of events the devs and community relation managers tend to tell the fans what they want to hear.
