Don't know how many of you tried out SWG throughout the 3 drastically different versions of the game, but SOE is finally shutting down the servers on this abortion of a MMO. It was my first MMORPG. I really enjoyed it for the first year or so. As bad as TOA is decried for being a game changer in DAOC, imho it doesn't compare to the "Combat Upgrade" nor the "New Game Experience" changes that made droves of people subscribers to leave the game.

SWG (and to a lesser extent DAOC) are basically proof that when something is working, you shouldn't drastically mess with it. Cataclysm is actually doing the same to WoW at the moment. The homogenized raiding/gearing process combined with the horrible time between patches is costing them subscriptions quickly enough that they just sent an email to everyone giving them a free copy to give to their friends. That's an act of desperation.

Well, for one Chloromancers got hit kinda hard. My friend is having a more difficult time healing in raids now My biggest gripe is with PvP. Basically if you have more than 2 in your group, it is considered a premade group and you sit in queue until you can get matched up with other premades..problem is, that wait can be a very long time (waited an hour a few days ago). Of course you can solo and get into a warfront in like a minute..but if you want to play with your friends or guild, you are sort of screwed. I would imagine this change took place to keep from the elite premades from stomping everyone in the warfronts but its affecting a lot more players than the gank squads.

Has anyone done PvP as well since DAOC? I know there were lots of complaints about 8-man gank squads, but battlegroups and such provided zerg protection, and it was pretty fun to be in a good 8-man. Suicide PBAOEing zergs on keeps or milegates never got old. I remember being pretty disappointed just by the 5-person group limit in WoW, let alone how bad its PvP sucked.

PvP hasn't been done well since DAOC, and arguably it hasn't been done well since pre-TOA. Talking to a Guild Wars 2 developer makes me hopeful for it though.

Yeah, I only popped back for a small amount of time post-TOA, and from what it seemed it just made the gap between elite and non-elite that much bigger (and I'm sure introduced that much more balance-screwing complexity with every artifact and ML ability addition). Ahhh, for the golden days when leveling to 50 sucked balls but after you finished you were done and done with PvE, and the playing field was pretty even equipment-wise in PvP.

Exactly. This is why games like League of Legends are stealing the PvP thunder away from MMOs. At least everyone's on even footing when a match starts there. Gear based games cannot have good PvP without stat caps and the like.

One of the biggest problems I see today is the lack of a community. Look at us, it's been personally 6 years since I've played DAoC, and we're still all reading and posting on this board. The IRC channel had 50+ people in it before the merge, and for a good time afterwards, more than 100. I dare you to find a WoW server where 100 people from both factions idle and chit chat all day. (On another note, I'd bet Ziphy is still idling in the channel right now) If Guild Wars can't foster a community outside of guild ties, which is hard because of the general populace playing them now, then I don't see how playing it will be any different than WoW other than the pvp system.

Yeah, another thing I noticed when I started playing WoW was the total lack of community. You rarely even grouped outside of your guild, let alone PvPed with, let alone chatted in any channel (in game or out) with. And getting to know anyone from the other faction on your server? Never. Was such a jarring change too; it's not like DAOC's servers' population at their peak were much smaller than a WoW server's population, but everyone seemed to get to know each other just fine in DAOC. I also think lack of dyeable armor, 5 person group limit, and of course no real PvP except canned and small population BGs (that were multi-server to boot) killed any chance of recognizing and wanting to talk to the enemy. Guild cloaks are a pretty minor thing but something DAOC got very right because they have a big impact; I was shocked that WoW hadn't copied that.

I had really never thought about that before - but it's true. That was a big deal. I remember approaching a keep from a distance and seeing, say, Ook Ook's emblem on the flags and just thinking "ugh....."

The best PvP game ever, was the original UO, but DAoC was a very close 2nd. Nothing has compared since. The thing I loved about those games, was the open field stuff, where you never really knew what you were going to run into. In set up BGs, you always know what you're up against, and that gets boring fast. I miss being in an 8 man, and coming over a hill and seeing 200 enemies and everyone yelling "OMG RUN!"...DAoC really did a lot of things right. I'd still take post ToA over WoW, any day. I just started Rift and I'm enjoying it a lot, but I don't get much time, so it's more of a way to relax for me than anything. My days of hardcore gaming are over.

25 hibs holding back 100 albs at amg for hours until getting sandwiched between alb rush and KW bumrush was some of the most fun I've had in an MMORPG. Respec'ing my eld to void when ToA hit and stacking +casting speed gear before they capped it was the most fun I had post-TOA. 2 void bolts + 2 DD nukes before the first bolt hit was so much fun while humping amg. One of the best things about DoaC pre-TOA was when you hit 50, did of tiny bit of gear farming (pre-enchant days ... post enchant you just spend a few plat on some crafted and enchanting) and you were good to go. Or if you took a couple months off and came back, you were still good to go. Once Mythic turned it into a farm fest with ToA and then ruined frontiers ... DoaC was dead to me. WoW was fun for me, but it was kind of like eating fast food compared to the fine dining of DaoC in it's prime.
