It's good!

Go in expecting a movie closer to a slightly scarier Goonies or ET instead of a monster flick and you will love it. Third act falls apart slightly, but the interaction between the kids in the first 2/3 is really fun so I didn't care about the flaws at the end.

Also stay during the beginning of the credits!

Seriously. Too many people are asking "Is this like cloverfield?" No. The only similarity is they both have monsters with extra arms in them. This is a movie where a group of kids go on an adventure to solve the mystery of why the train was derailed while making their zombie movie for a film festival. If you go in expecting a monster movie you're gonna be disappointed.

That's not to say there isn't a monster, it's just that it's less important than the kids and their story.

Inviso-spoiler-text ahoy!

Yes. They spent like a third of the movie trying to find out why old man Woodward derailed the train, why the military was in town, and what was going on with the electricity.

Alice's kidnapping was the start of the final act, which I admitted already was weaker than it could have been because they did not fully tie the monster's story to the kids, nor did they provide resolution to the father/son conflict and acceptance of the loss of Joe's mother as strongly as they could have. I feel like we'll probably get a director's cut that touches on some of these issues.

Finally saw this yesterday and it was fantastic! I thought the story and acting were top notch - the dialogue in particular was great. I agree about the 3rd act somewhat but like Rhylith I felt so much goodwill had been built up by then that I didn't care.

What wasn't fantastic was seeing this in a 2D digital projection through a 3D lens with the polarizing filters still in or whatever... it turned such a beautiful "high production value"(*) film into a dark murky mess. But at least I knew to be on the lookout for that (thanks Internet!), and after it was over I bitched and got my money back. FU Sony!

(*) wink

hi5!

Hopefully enough people make an uproar about this so that theaters start swapping the lenses properly.

Yeah. I didn't even get any trouble getting the refund - I didn't even have to ask, they offered it very quickly. And they were aware of the problem - they said the only way they could swap lenses was to have someone from Sony come do it.

Which is bogus, you just need to train someone to do it and spend the time when you swap lenses. Or not use Sony 4K projectors until they fix the problem.

3D is rapidly falling apart though, thankfully.
