Will this be the sci-fi WoW that breaks the genre out of its seemingly eternal medieval/fantasy mindset? I'm not getting my hopes up but I think this game may do really really well.

It's getting good hype anyway. I'm not sure how I feel, but overall I'm looking forward to trying it out. If done right it could be pretty cool - I hear it's pretty much more of the same, but on a pretty decent scale. So maybe it'll be the couple million NA subbed sci-fi MMO after all. I'm looking forward to the day when there are more than a couple of those. Plus, I'm a pretty big fan of Bioware. And Blizzard really. It would be great to see those two contending against each other for the prime MMO slot in the future. We can only win from something like that.

If it was any other publisher then Electronic Arts I would be really looking forward to it. Ever since Bioware was aquired by them their titles have a really rushed unfinished quality to them. See Dragon Age 2 for exhibit A. Honestly, EA seems to be the place where good companies get strip mined for quick cash and then quickly implode as all the talent and good ideas leave. Unless its a sequel-conveyor belt like the Maddens or The Sims where you can modify or add a feature or 2 and pop another one out in time for the next quarterly reporting EA just seems to be the place where a successful original release gets picked up, they either cancel the next product or rush and turn out a steaming pile of poo.
I would also like to see a sci-fi themed title really take off, other then Eve Online I know there are some free to play/spend $ for phat l00tz ones out there with modest crowds but most are forced open world PvP. I loved everything about Anarachy Online except the stability wish that had been alot bigger. Anything exciting about that upcoming Warhammer 40K MMO?

It'll be popular initially, for sure. It seems to be more story based and if you've seen mission videos the ADD instant gratification gang will probably zone and tune right out during their first mission dialog. This isn't gonna be instant queue... Based on the intellect and attention span of your average MMO player these days, it'll be interesting to see how it flies. Ultimately it looks typical MMO with a sci-fi wrapper and SP RPG dialog lengths so they're really going to have to kill on character development and content to make it remotely worth sticking with. IMO, fantasy simply works better for RPGs, and thus MMORPGs - especially MMORPGs. There's a few reasons for this. People buy into magic easier than they do whatever magic-like mechanism (psionics, the force, whatever) you have in sci-fi, and it's always something screwy. People buy into elves, gnomes, orcs, spiders - more recognizable races and bad guys than you'll typically find in sci-fi. Even with star wars, most people are familiar with a few simple stories and "mobs" from movies, not the whole star wars lore catalog or with biowares KOTOR SW stuff - so a lot of people will be totally lost in an alien environment. The scale of sci-fi is hard to do justice too if you're going with more than one world, whereas the scale of fantays is always just one world, one continent, or evne a small region on map somewhere.

Wow. I have to agree. Lucas and Spielburg both seem to have lost their "magic" since the new Star Wars movies came out.

I loved the SW prequels, and specially "Revenge of the Sith", very good movie... there are not that many good Sci-Fi movies in the last decade. About Spielberg, I loved Minority Report. And about both, I didn't think Indiana Jones 4 was that bad... I have it in Blu-Ray and I enjoy watching it again, until Lucasfilm decides to release the others in Blu-Ray too. And I'm eagerly waiting for "Tintin". And I'm waiting for SW:TOR of course, but I'm afraid it will be another "three monther" MMORPG which you play through the levels once and then quit. The storytelling talent of Bioware will definitely make it worth playing, but for how long? Guild Wars 2 look way more promising concerning innovation, Bioware seems to head for a high quality "WoW in space with a story" clone.

Sorry, but I base the fact that I like a movie or not only on my own opinion, not attention whores on Internet blogs. But if you need such reviews to make up your own opinion, more power to you!

Stung a bit, are you? LOL. It's perfectly valid to like the Star Wars prequels. Just like it's perfectly valid to like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Actually, I'm not sure which shows less taste and appreciation for actual quality between the three, but there you have it.

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/2011/04/29/star-wars-the-old-republic-preview/1 Fixed link. Also lends support to the claims that this is less a mmorpg and more a pve version of guildwars, a single group rpg with a graphical group forming interface. Developers have lost sight of what the first m in mmorpg can mean. Given there are very few developers with the money to make a quality mmorpg, this is disappointing.

I think Bioware is a one trick pony. They make interactive movie RPGs very well, and it seems like they attempting to do the same thing for a multiplayer environment, but call it a MMO.

Stung a bit to hear that someone actually liked the movie as a movie? On Topic: SW:TOR just doesn't grab me. I don't really care to play an MMO that seems to use story as its main selling point. I love a good story, but with an MMO I'm in it for the gameplay. What happens when you max out your character, does the story just up and stop until the next patch three months down the line? I can't feel attached to a story about my character if it's the same as the next persons, aside from a simple dialog option. It's going to have to really define a character on an individual basis for me to care about it. We already have enough MMO's out there stagnating the genre, which do nothing to drive the genre forward and this doesn't seem to show any sign of trying either. Outside of voiceovers, I haven't seen them announce anything out of the box that is worth mentioning or eyebrow raising. I'm sure it will be decent from a production value, but just another WoWclone or WoW in space.

It has the potential to turn a corner, so to speak. Having a classic strong story telling experience Bioware is known for. My favorite game of all time was Mass Effect 2. My second favorite was Baldur's Gate (et al). All for reasons that were, at their respective times, unique to Bioware games. I'm afraid, however, that SW:TOR has been tainted too much by ex Mythic developers. So I am cautiously optimistic about it. To the extreme.

My guess is, will be like Korrigan, 3 months or so and then come back from time to time. But I don't really any sub games for many months in a row any more.
I expect I will like it, I'm not sure if it will have the big open world feel of a MMORPG but I'm hoping.
I am not inspired by any involvement from EA or Mythic, i'll put it that way. And I would take more from DAoC than I would Warhammer personally.

My spirit is so low when it comes to new MMOs. I've been burned so many times. Rift had the best potential to pull me away from WoW but it failed at end-game. I absolutely loved that game right up until I hit 50 and was geared with T1/T2 gear. There was literally nothing to do at that point except farm PvP ranks. I hold out hope for some new MMO in the future that is great. I don't even know if I'll buy another MMO at release anytmore though. I may ask in the forums at the 1 or 2 month period. If it is worth playing then, giddy up!

Addendum: I played AC1 for the 14-day trial and was amazed at how fun the game was. I never subscribed because I was 10 years late on trying it and Darktide was a pretty established playerbase. I had a hard time with the graphics as well. Good game if you have a history with it. It was immense and in never held your hand in the least bit. EvE online was complicated enough to keep me busy for awhile but I'd rather be a person than a ship :P They need avatars in that game. I'm rambling. Back to work for me.

You should give someone a terribly painful root canal just because AC1 did not meet your expectations.

It so far plays like any Bioware game. Fun... once. I absolutely loved Fallout 3, for example, but I sure as he'll wouldn't play it again. 120 hours was nice though.
