I don't like the dimensions or the all touch screen but I might buy one just for the 2 month battery life.

i don't think the screen is any different that the first nook screen is. it's just shorter because it doesn't have an extra touch screen panel.

My complaint isn't that the screen is smaller, it is that the entire thing is boxier. I hold my Nook very low on the device and with that thing I would basically be gripping it in a way that with either inconvenience my neck or my arms. If the entire screen is a touchscreen like the Sony Daily Edition and they preserve the E-ink look it will be quite the piece of technology at that price. The Sony reader is still like $250.

no i knew that i was speaking more to the dimensions of the thing. i'll definitely buy an upgrade if it still looks awesome screen-wise. but since it's a touch screen i'm not gonna preorder buy it. i'll wait until the stores have it and go look at the ones they offer up to play with.

Yeah, I'll definitely try it out at work first. Although, that price point is almost impulse buying price. And I kind of like my 3 G now on my nook. <edit> honestly, I'll buy it unless there is just something I hate about the design, which is possible.

With the 100+ books I have bought from amazon since the kindle 1, I am pretty much stuck with them now. Looks like a decent device though.

i have a nook and i frequently buy books from amazon to use on my nook. i have to strip the drm occasionally and i have to change the format but that's really easy if it's not a topaz book. if it's topaz i just return it because i can't read that isht on my nook. (amazon generally has better prices but the nook, imo, is much better than the kindle.)

from what i've been told, there is a program called calibre out there that can convert E-reader file formats from one format to any other format you want. haven't tried it yet.

calibre only works on things w/o drm. you need like.. python and a specific script for it to remove the drm from amazon files. which actually once you install python you never need to touch it so that's nice. i have a file that will do it all for me automatically once i tell it which book to do. it's just an enormous pain when the book is topaz and it's not worth it.

What does the screen look like? Does it look like the old Nook? It is glassier? Does it look thicker or more reflective? Even a little?

No, screen is different. More of a textured matte finish. Looks really good with less glare. <edit> Now I see what you were referring too. No, it's not a touch screen technically. It uses inferred sensors on the borders to detect where your finger hits the screen. This allows for it to be a pure pearl eInk display without having to lay a touchscreen over it causing you to lose contrast (i.e. Sony Daily Edition). So, in answer. No it is still a great looking touchscreen with glare, loss of contrast or anything else.

i'm really tempted to buy one because then i could give my mom my current nook and it'd be nice for her but at the same time i'm like mine is still perfectly acceptable and for $200 i can get a lot of games that are coming out soon. decisions decisions.

It's much smaller as well, take the first Nook's screen and just add about 3/4 - 1 inch border all the way around and there you go. Actually fits into some of my pockets. Still has the side buttons just like the previous nook to turn the pages, and you are actually able to select whether the top or bottom button pages forward/backward. Not a big feature or anything, but a nice little bit of customization. Shopping and navigating on the Nook itself is now much simpler, and the on-screen keyboard and menus are much, much more responsive than the First Gen Nook's touchscreen, which seemed sluggish to me. You also do not get the refresh when turning every page, only about every 6 or so pages will it do a refresh. Again, not a game changer, however it is a nice touch. Overall I personally prefer it over the original nook, and will keep it.

Been looking into this new nook as well. Will check it out first at B&N before I decide. I already have my ipad which i use to read on but this seems a tad bit easier to carry around for long hauls.

Ive loved reading on my ipad and its the main reason why I got it. That and for school purposes. Is this nook that much better than a kindle? I assume I cant use my ebooks from the kindle app on the book correct?

You can if you strip the DRM off and convert them. Otherwise, yes, in my opinion the Nook is better. This is from my personal experience of handling both (Kindle 3 & DX vs. Nook 1st generation), but its just my opinion.

I finally broke down and bought the Nook 2. It is a great device and I only have two complaints. 1. The page turn buttons suck. They aren't completely awful but they are clearly inferior to the Nook 1 buttons. If you don't hit the sweet spot in the middle of the button they are mooshy and awkward and even hitting the sweet spot on them isn't an ideal press. I've actually started turning pages by touching the screen with my stylus instead of using those ass buttons. 2. I can't be the only one who refuses to touch the screen they read on. B&N should offer a stylus in the Nook accessories. I resent having to order a stylus separately from Amazon when B&N should have anticipated that design flaw. I also don't love the new interface but I'm sure I will get used to it; nobody likes change. My concern over the size of the device ended up not bothering me all that much though if I had the choice I would choose to have the words at Nook 1 height. In the end it was worth the money for the increased battery life, not that I believe it will last as long as they claim.

tell me something, because i have dropped my nook 1 enough in the last week to break it somewhat and now i'm afraid i have to upgrade, how the fk do you change font size and style? because in the store when i was playing with it, i could NOT figure that out. i felt retarded but i sat there going this feels like a right click situation but i don't know how one does that. menu button just sends me back to the nook screen. wataf.

It took me 5-10 minutes to figure out how the hell you changed the font and now I have to turn it on to figure it out again. While reading a book you have to press the middle of the screen (so as to not turn the page instead) and it brings up the 'right click' menu. You change font there. I couldn't figure it out because touching the screen is such a foreign concept to me I never thought to even try it.

i swear to god i pushed every part of the screen i could when i was playing with it. someone had set the font to the maximum size and i was like this is nice.. 4 words per page and all.. that was one of the main reasons i didn't upgrade.

After some testing is appears that the entire middle third of the Nook works to bring it up. It is split in to three vertical sections: page back, menu, page forward. The key is you have to be in a neutral reading a book state. You can't do it from any of the other menus. If you press the 'U' button first you can't bring up the right click menu.

There is also a small upward pointing arrow on the screen that brings up that "right click" screen.
