Thoughts: 1. This is great news. Really great. I know that it doesn't mean the end of terrorism or anything, but it is a massive blow to Al Qaeda both in their leadership and symbolically. Maybe this can be a good indicator that it's time to accelerate drawing back our troops in Afghanistan so we can have one less thing to worry about. 2. Obama's having a hell of a week. It'll be interesting to see what this does to his approval numbers/re-election chances. Also to see what impact this has on the stock markets on Monday. 3. Not that there were any doubts about Panetta replacing Gates anyways, but Panetta being in charge of the CIA when they finally pull off what they've been attempting for years definitely makes you feel more comfortable about him taking over the defense department. 4. Kinda hilarious that coverage of the news cut short the end of Celebrity Apprentice, adding further insult to Trump after the birth certificate release and the absolute slaughter at the Correspondents' Dinner.

Yeah, the kind of people who belong to organizations like Al Qaeda tend to think in messianic terms and will probably view this as a martyrdom. I understand that his body has already been buried at sea, and I wonder how the terrorist community feels about that. hmm interesting... i was just reading an article about it and apparently they got him sometime late yesterday (5/1)... my mother's birthday is sept. 11th and my niece's birthday is may 1st (she turned 11 yesterday).

It's a good thing. Al Queda will probably not be a factor anymore, although I would bet that it's various leaders will branch out to start new terrorist organizations. Still, good to see him gone. It's also funny to watch Pakistan to play dumb and claim they didn't know he was there. If that's true, they need to revamp their intelligence organizations.

No kidding. Mysterious massive barbed-wire covered walled compound in a suburb within walking distance of a military academy with no phone or Internet? They were either in on it or monumentally stupid.

Obviously you two both posted before reports surfaced that OBL's folks had told authorities that they were filming The Real World: Abbottabad at the compound to alleviate all suspicion. (The inevitable) Taiwanese News Animation! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiDyrkU0WAQ&feature=player_embedded Also this is still the best tweet I've seen on the matter: BREAKING: Osama bin Laden is dead. It kind of irritates that they went through the effort of trying to give him a proper Islamic burial. Obama even said that Bin Laden wasn't a Muslim, but a mass murderer of innocent people, most of them being of Muslim faith. I understand they're trying to avoid a big Muslim uprising, but the good, moral Muslim people don't consider Bin Laden a true Muslim anyways, and those who do, already want to kill all of us anyways. Maybe they should have strapped a bomb to his chest, held a funeral for him so his followers could pay their final respects, then set the damn thing off. Now that'd be justice!

Yes, lets not do the right thing. Instead we'll just inflame the ruling parties/islamists in nations that are in the process of democratic revolution for our own selfish fantasy. No. We're the United States. We're better than that. It's a shame such a large portion of our country has forgotten this and decided to share in your opinion.

Way to be so politically correct you can't understand a joke. Seriously though, him and his followers aren't true Muslims, and they already hate us, so why bother? I don't honestly know if they buried him at sea to honor their beliefs or not, but I don't think I would have asked the military to do that. You could make an argument that this single individual has done more to hurt Muslims and their religion than any human being in history, yet he deserves to be respected and honored in their ways? I truly hope his beliefs are wrong, because if they aren't, we just sent him to heaven.

Sorry Kall. I guess you have to realize I work with people from the most conservative/tea party district in Texas. To give you an idea of how it is, there are multiple people who have had 9/11 desktops and Reagan calendars for years. My ability to filter jokes like that is completely gone because there's too many people who will say that with a straight face around me. And yes, I've always been under the assumption that when our military kills someone we either leave the bodies for the opposing force to pick up, deliver them to their side, or give them an appropriate burial. I may be wrong about that but it was the impression I got.

Yeah man, the bomb funeral was totally a joke. My point was mainly to not go out of the way either way for the guy. He's nothing. Honestly, I'm happy he's gone, but I didn't want to go party in the streets over it. I look at it as a job well done and onto the next problem now. Oh, where's his body? It's gone, so don't worry about it. XXXXXX is now on our list and our goal is the same with him. I didn't want his body paraded around for all to see, either. I just didn't want the effort put in to "respect" him or his beliefs. His beliefs are built around terror, war, and murder. Why go out of your way to honor that? You couldn't leave his body behind, because they would use it as a shrine or a way to rally support for him, but I feel that honoring him could do the same thing in their eyes. The less effort you put into how he has been handled, the less important he seems. I think the most important thing here, is I'm hoping the computers and information they found in that compound will ultimately be crippling for Al Qaeda. We'll have to see what comes out of that.

I wonder if there's any info found on those that may not be actionable because everyone around the world knows we nabbed Bin Laden (and his computers, drives, etc.) - i.e. if we had waited to announce this to the world, was there any intel in there we could have used to raid other Al Qaeda members first? Then again, it wasn't exactly a low-profile mission, and there's no shortage of questions about Pakistani complicity, so perhaps word would have spread among AQ folks anyway.

Yeah, it would have been nice to have woken up one day and heard that Bin Laden was killed 6 months ago, which lead to all of the key players in Al Qaeda. All of their assets had been frozen and their network had been completely shut down. Enjoy your afternoon.
