Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Optional Bosses in Heroic HoO

Lylirra posted:
We'll need to weigh the value of optional dungeon and raid bosses further before we make any changes. There's good arguments on both sides. On the one hand, optional bosses can be great for keeping dungeons and raids from feeling too linear or formulaic -- and, when done right, they can also give groups a meaningful choice between getting extra loot and completing a run faster. On the other, optional bosses can sometimes create social tension, especially in Dungeon Finder groups, if players disagree whether they should invest the time to fight them.
We know there?s room for improvement, though. For example, we understand that it's probably not the best idea to have optional bosses dropping loot that's BiS. Giving those bosses side-grades (rather than strict upgrades) or similar items could make the "extra loot" vs. "quicker run" decision less stressful. We also feel that optional bosses in general might work better in raids than in dungeons because raids tend to be made up of players who know each other and/or have a strong leader who's empowered to make calls about which bosses to kill.
Heroic Halls of Origination is a good example of where optional bosses can cause conflicts. In retrospect, we feel that it may have been better to require players to kill all four of the "top" bosses -- Isiset, Ammunae, Setesh, and Rajh -- to get credit for their random Heroic dungeon rewards (instead of just Rajh). While we don't yet know if retrofitting the dungeon or the random dungeon reward requirements is the best course of action, we've learned a lot from watching groups, reading your feedback, and just playing ourselves. We?re definitely keeping those lessons in mind as we develop future content and if we do make any changes, we'll be sure to let you know.

When grinding for gear I look for two things; fast and fun. I can take something that is not a lot of fun if it is fast. I can take it a little less if it is a lot of fun but really long. Slow and frustrating is not something I'll do much of.
It is always hard to get people to work together for hours on end. Real life often gets in the way. This is the reasons there is so much downtime in raids. Even with planned runs people have things come up. Add in random people and it can be insane.
Best world of course is fast and fun. That is why I loved the LK heroics so much. I understood the problems LK heroics created. So far I've seen those same problems repeated in the normal Cat runs, if a little less so. I never saw much skill used in the LK heroics and I see it from time to time in Cat. I guess that is better. I'm assuming that the heroics will require a great deal so skill. I just pray that by time time I get to them they are fast and fun.
The bottom line is anything that will put a heroic under 45 minutes I'll be for.

In other news people will try and take the path of less resistance. I mean really? I've been booted because I try and do 1 of the last 4 bosses that is optional in H HoO. Lets just stay my new tank has had some serious bad luck with plate tank bracers. That is correct. People would rather increase their own kick timers then agree to something I state when entering the dungeon.

When cata first hit the heroics were fun and interesting - like mini raids - they require a little more attention to detail, cc at times, etc. Once you master them and you're grinding the crap out of them...again...of course people want shorter runs since cata heroics already generally take far longer than previous heroics.
Grinding lengthy heroics that are no longer fresh or challenging just to get a few points, especially knowing the points are going to be revamped repeatedly and lose all meaning, is one reason I have little desire to log in anymore.
Bliz blew it with cata IMO, in several ways, and sticking with the same formulas for emblem "progression" and system is one of them. It got old in wotlk and needed some kind of twist.
