What are the chances of someone taking over/updating Digero's plugins?
|
Digero's excellent plugins have become an irreplaceable part of my AC gameplay, but there are various bugs still present in them as well as ways they could be improved. One main way would be to convert them to Virindi Views, so I could finally kick the Decal Views habit altogether and stop bringing my computer to a complete halt every time I have to open a non-VVS plugin. At this point, there's no real replacement for Target Info, GoArrow, SSSort, and Quest Timer. Has anyone discussed contacting Digero and asking for the source to his plugins?

You're right, it does look like the source for most if not all of them is available. My other question is then: what are the chances someone would take on updating one or more of them?

I have not seen any bugs in his plugins. Digero has some of the cleanest code I have seen of any plugin and rarely has any problems. If you post what bugs you are seeing Digero will probably respond. He checks these forums pretty often.

http://www.virindi.net/junk/goarrow-vvs2.png As you can see, I've done some work on making GoArrow VVS-capable. Someone else who was interested in seeing this happen did contact Digero on the subject and we are waiting to see what happens. Really it is all up to him...even though his plugins are 'open source', if you look at the bottom of his page you will see the following statement: Digero posted: Source code is available to aid aspiring plugin writers in getting started. If you plan to use large portions of my source in your own plugin, please contact me first.
Thus even though the project is marked as being under the MIT license I would not distribute without his permission, since the marked license and the statement on his page are contradictory.

I'd LOVE to see a VVS version of go-arrow happen. One concern I have with older plug-ins atm is many that work alright may start to run afoul of server changes such as the new, apparently much lower server interaction limits (aka the COC boot issue for sending too many info requests or whatever the exact detail is) that we are starting to see. Quest Timer is likely ok on this issue but eh other it depends upon how they are coded and how much they really interact with the server over the short time span, I could see target info possibly running afoul of this in addition to SSSORT since it needs some info in order to decide what to move where. Go-Arrow is a bit more likely on the safe side of the limit (esp since I use Go-Arrow and don't seem to have issues) but I would not carve that in stone... Mind you this is all guess work, they may all work just fine in regards to the COC boot issue...

Quest Timer is most often the culprit, due to the way it keeps track of quests (one XML file for ALL characters). If you dual log and try to pick up an item that begins a Quest Timer quest, it sometimes (though not all the time) crashes Quest Timer and requires restarting AC to get it to work again. Quest Timer could be improved by using a separate XML file for each character, thus eliminating any chance of two instances of the plugin trying to access the same file at the same time and running into an error. Target Info also has a bug or two. It can't tell the difference between Expose Weakness and Imperil/Bludge Vuln, and the spell durations aren't correct (Turbine changed the durations for debuffs sometime recently). I've gone in and edited settings manually to make the durations correct for level 7 debuffs, but most users wouldn't know how to do that. I agree with you that given their age, Digero's plugins are fantastic pieces of software. There have however been changes to AC over the years since he quit that have affected his plugins in a negative way. Aside from the architecture of Quest Timer, no major changes are required, but fixing those few bugs and converting them to VVS would be most welcome.

Someone just emailed me about this post. I wasn't aware that Virindi was still waiting for my OK -- I'd already told the other person who emailed me in January that it's fine Virindi, thanks for updating GoArrow. Let me know if/when you release the VVS version. I'll add a link to it on my GoArrow page. To anyone else interested in updating my plugins, you're free to do so without my permission. That said, if you do release an updated version of one of my plugins, I'd be interested to know about it. I updated my website to link to the MIT Licensed open source code for the other plugins, hosted on GoogleCode. I removed the source code that isn't under the MIT License. I also removed the statement that Virindi quoted above -- it did not apply to the source code released under the MIT License, but that wasn't obvious. I don't check the VN boards regularly anymore. The best way to contact me is to email me.

Wow, awesome. Can't wait for the VVS GoArrow version Thanks Digero, your plugins are still one of the most useful out there.
