It was only 'popular' among gamers on Day 1. That has changed drastically over the years.

It redefined what Gamer means, it broadened it, it made it more mainstream. Now people with lives play it, people who do other things besides sit in front of a computer. It is a strange concept but gaming doesn't mean the same thing now that you remember.

I remember when a lot of my favourite bands were awesome, too, before the uncool mainstream masses started enjoying them.

Heh, most WoW "players" aren't "gamers".

It was popular before day 1 - 500k in the stress test.
WoW is as awesome as ever, some people are just bored with it after too many years.

we were talking about this in the guild earlier today, how pvp and even the game in general was fun. not every class could heal to full or had 5 stuns/silences etc. before DKs, when shaman and pallies were the special faction classes. I think the worst has been the amount of spells, I've been out of room for macros since BC...almost forced into getting one of those gamer mice just for the extra buttons

That too is a matter of opinion. To some, it is getting long in the tooth, to others, it still is fun. It is all in the eye of the beholder. I do love the song in your sig though Great song.

I don't think the WoW was playable on day 1. I'm really when sure when WoW went mainstream ... does all the free game time from all the server downtime on my account count as remembering it before it was popular?

First 3 months for any mmo are the best. When no one knows anything about the game.

Now that right there speaks volumes to me. You see, I PVP and enjoy running BG's to level, and gear before arena etc. etc. It just baffles my mind how many people don't try to win. And the total lack of fair play with botting. But now that I think about it, this is why. True gamers will always keep trying and pushing for victory. And now that we have non gamers playing... I dunno this all adds up.

I miss the days when mmos were something the old D&D crowd and genuine gamers played, not the myspace raging smacktards that inhabit them now. WoW from a gameplay/design perspective might still actually be a good game, but I can't separate out the horrific so-called community that has turned the game into just a headache inducing annoyance fest.

It`s that "mmorpg trope" thing, where people miss old school/vanilla times. For some stupid reason, mmorpgs tend to evolve into something craptastic. Ironically, Eve Online doesn´t really fit because the game evolved without raping too much of the vanilla stuff. (ymmv) As far as I can say, I miss the time when items really had specific stats and not "all in one + this that and that" and brainfart designs. You could stack up on one, possibly two, but you´d lack the other stat. Great times, but it`s simply a law. 80s won`t come back either ^^. Where's that damn Nexus thing from Star Trek Generations movie when you need it?!

WoW was awesome in pre-BC, pre-GC since then all the fun has been normalized, and genericized right out of it!

Eve Online! It takes a particular type of masocist to play that game.

Wow hasn't change its level of awesomeness, or population size in over 6 years, just your persepctive of it has changed. Currently it is nothing but full of awesome for me. I expect that in two-three months I will tire of it again and I will cancel the accounts.
