Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Where to go to get caught up on AC implementations?
|
Greetings! I stopped playing AC right around the time Throne of Destiny was being released. I think the last new thing I witnessed in game was fellowship buffs, and improved self buff animation times. Recently found myself wanting to try to get back into the game, but I'd really like to be somewhat in the loop when I do so. It will not be an overnight dive back into the game, so while I'm waiting I'd like to be learning what to look for. I've seen things mentioned in threads that I have no clue about, and even the graphics in the banner at the top of this forum all look foreign to me. Is there a site that lists each monthly update and what it introduced to the game? Or, could I get a crash course posted here? There's about 5 to 6 years of info I'm looking to catch up on, and any help would be appreciated. One quick question: Do monthly updates still happen, or are they as infrequent as Turbine updating their main AC page? Note: I was successful in remembering my login for both accounts! Woohoo!

Monthly updates are still done, though how many changes they make each month is never certain. I believe you could go to the main Asherons call page, and go to the updates part and just go backwards in time to find new information, but honestly the best way to go about that, in my opinion, is to just get in game and find out through people and exploration. There is so many new things from when you last played, and I would never be able to compile them into a list for you. Now days, there is basically only two populated servers, which are Frostfell and Darktide. While there are some stragglers on all the other servers, they do not compared to the population of these two. I would suggest playing on FF, and finding an allegiance with helpful people who would be able to breach the subject of updates through the past 6 years or so. Though there are many changes, the main functions of the game are the same, so you should be able to jump back in without too much difficulty. Good Luck! and I play as Psylocin/Psilocin on Frostfell if you find yourself unable to find help. I'm always free to help someone assimilate back into AC life.

Thank you for the reply. I noticed somewhere (on a forum, though I may have misinterpreted) that right out of character creation you go through training, and you can go through some kind of quest camp and in relatively short fashion you are around level 50. I know that may not seem like much these days, but man I remember how much time it took and how difficult it was to get up to a level like that. Granted there were 126's running around all over the place but I thought I'd never see it. The reason I bring it up is because if I start playing on a new server then that's starting from scratch. Just wondering how deep in over my head I'd be. Although, if it's the only server with people, then there isn't much choice. WE is where my AC heart is, but when there's not anyone around then what's the point?

Yes there is a place called the Facility Hub, which has 3 quests for every 5 level intervals I.E. 5, 10, 15, 20, up to lvl 45. These quests will give you a full level, so you are able to start the lvl 20 qsts at 20, and after u finish the 3 you will be 23. You have to hunt until the next group of quests which would be 25. Leveling to 50 now days is a walk in the park, since most xp rewards from monsters and quests have been raised. Normally i can level a character to 50 in a day or two with some diligence. Not to mention, on frostfell you will always find free public buffbots to use, which aids greatly in leveling, until you are able to buff yourself.

Wow, that sounds pretty nice! I can't believe I missed the link during my first pass through the main AC page for the old information I was looking for. Currently read through 2007 events and just to that point it seems really cool. Hopefully at work tomorrow I'll be able to read the remaining dev logs, and then perhaps I'll have something else I need to investigate!

I was in a similar boat as you. I came back a month ago after over 5 years away (I played about 6 monhts of Throne of Destiny). The game is so different now.
I just jumped in and started playing, while each day doing some research on AC Wiki. It took about a week to even remember the basics. Now, after a month, it seems pretty familiar. There are a few things that I still find odd. There are almost no people in towns anymore. Go to Teth and it will most likely be empty (and I play on FF, which is the most populous server now...although at any time the players are in the hundreds as opposed to thousands of days of old.)
I created 4 new toons over the winter break, and I leveled all 4 to over 50 in a combined two days. It took me over a year to get one character to 50 in the first year of AC in 2000. So different. YOu really need to get to 150+ if you want to play with others, until then it is kind of a solo game for the most part. Even if you do find somone your level they are probably powerleveling up and will be 150+ in less than a month (sometimes less than a week).
Good luck and if you come to FF, say Hi to Borwych. Welcome back.

That's amazing! Not sure what my character levels will be on WE, one account was all 126+, but nothing was close to maxed, so maybe in the 130s probably. And my original account had 1 character that's probably between 126 and 130, and the last one I was focusing on was maybe in his 90s. Almost done reading all of the event things on Turbines site. It said in the dev notes a couple of times that expected XP per hour for some areas is 250 mil?! That seems outrageous, but seems fun, and probably dangerous. I was hoping (and still might, you never know) to find something that says you no longer drop items on death (simply because I have a bad habit of playing late, and a death right before logging off will keep me up even later But some things that really have me excited are tailoring so that armor is exactly what I want. Armor sets; not sure what they are but it sounds neat. Epics? Bigger that Majors? I'll only know once I get started again, and before I can I've gotta upgrade a couple things on the PC I want to play on (it's my orginal PC I played on 6 years ago) so I'm using the time before the parts arrive to read and build the hype! Even saw that you can rename characters?! How sweet is that! Regardless, I'm excited to get back into it, and I hope that the population isn't so sparce that I'm bored. I do hope however that I'm able to successfully play both accounts together to fellow through plugins and whatnot, because if I recall right, my favorite axer needed creature buffs from my mage. We'll see if I had creature trained or not upon return. Thanks for the input, I'd like to hear anything else you've got to offer.

About the only other thing I can suggest (I am certainly not the expert, after all I have only been back a month) is that if you want to level up quickly, it is as much about the questing these days (or more) than it is about grinding in dungeons (unless you are macroing, in which case you or your computer will be grinding).
For the 90-130 levels, which is where I came back to, There are a bunch of soloable quests (some are easier if you have a friend but not usually necessary...this is from a melee perspective). Of course you have the usual tusks, Pincers, and Jaws which are all now on a 6 day timer instead of the old 21 day. You also have the Crystaline Crags which have a daily repeatable kill task, as well as a weekly rare gem turn in both for good xp. There are also a series of crystaline dungeons up on that plateau, however I haven't had much luck soloing them at my level (bring a friend or two and you should be fine).
Also, quests such as the Tanada house of (Earth, Water, Storms,etc...) are good xp and repeatable. Also do the sword of Bellenesse quest, massive xp for your level considering it is like ten minutes work. Olthoi Chasms...the first four levels anyway..are soloable for good xp. Whispering Blade Chapterhouse quest sreies (friend of Silyun)and the Moars Beach Castle Quests (although not the last one...that is scary hard for 100ish characters to solo.)
Added: ALmost forgot Menhir Rings quest (Cara the Apprentice in Xyrabadan) gives a complete level of xp, repeatable every 20 something day....like 40 minutes work and no killing anything. Also Shield of Yanshi and Defender of Zaihkal are good xp for this level

WOW! Huge thanks for that information. I'm all for soloable quests. I'm sure my melee will be fine for those, and anything that gives a full level is worth trying. That's pretty awesome to hear. Sounds like a lot of fun and catching up to do!

Well, I'm back!... Sort of Got my hardware I needed, installed AC and downloaded the update files from Turbines site. Launch up AC and see the familiar load up screen with the vials at the bottom that fill up indicating connectivity and updates. The first vial fills up and I start getting excited. Then I wait for it... wait for it... and wait. Finally, a new screen that tells me my connection is lost. Won't update. After some quick searches, it appears to be an issue with my router and how it handles port forwarding. And the tutorial from portforward.com shows a screenshot that is inconsistent with the interface I'm given in my router, in one huge example. The example on the site shows boxes separated by a hyphen ( - ) indicating input for a range of ports. Yet mine only allows for a single port to be typed, and requires a static IP address. Even disabling the firewall in my router doesn't resolve it. So I'll spend what free time I have today at work looking for the next step. Perhaps turbines forums will let me log in and someone there will recognize the problem. Anyway, I can't wait to get back in, and I'm so close now!

Got past the patch issues, now I can't get out of portal space! Spent the last couple of hours trying and no success. Sometimes I can' see character stats and inventory, and sometimes I can't. Going to mess around some more tomorrow after work, but I just don't know what else to try. I've done everything that I've noticed in other threads for people with similar issues. Neither computer (windows xp and windows 7) can log all the way in and get out of portal space. Any ideas?

Ack, sorry to hear your having problems. The only problem I ran into when I came back was that I had to install AC and Decal outside of the normal "program files" folder due to Windows 7's restrctive write access to anything inside that folder. I just made a C:/games/ac folder and installed everything in there and all was good. That doesn't sound like your issue, which sounds more like a firewall/internet connection issue.
I wish I could help. Good luck.
