Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Over the years i've been in several guilds. All of these guilds have had women players. The guild I'm in now is probably 20% female. But yet.. not a single one of them tank instances. I don't think I've ever known of a female that does tank instances. I'm sure that it happens but it seems rare to me. The question is why is this the case? Do they want to but aren't allowed? Do they just don't want that direct level of responsibility/control? Are they pressured into other roles? eg healer? Kind of curious as to opinions.

They are smarter than men and don't need the aggravation? . It's a good question. Now that I think about it, I have seen very few female tanks.

All the people in my guild play the role they want to play. We have some male tanks and some female. /shrug I personally play tank but I don't like to if I don't have to. I like being free to keep an eye on other things going on in any given fight. I feel more free to have that perspective and be able to do something about it as a DPS or healer. I feel like a better raid leader that can think on her feet when I'm not tanking.

I rolled with a female tank for a while. It was a breath of fresh air. All the competency and none of the awkward male nerd elitism. Unfortunately she quit the very second her then boyfriend stopped playing. She was a damned good tank too. I hooked up with her in DC later, but it was weird. I'll leave it at that. She still works for the same game developer.

I have seen a few female tanks, none that were really standouts. That's probably more a factor of the low number of them that I've seen than any sort of predisposition to being a good tank because one is male or female.

It's not a male or female thing.
My daughter and I have both main tanked for years, in raids, small groups, etc.
My son also main tanks, as raid leader, as a PuG raid leader.
My son also heals. He's the only healer I trust to cover my back when I'm tanking. He feels the same way about me healing when he's tanking. Nothing maternalistic about it. We're both hardcore, aggressive players that care about group dynamics and effective playing.
The archaic notion that females can't or don't tank or can't tank effectively makes my entire guild laugh.
People usually play the class best suited for them, and how they think/operate.
Tanking is a mind set.

When I first started playing MMOs I rolled tanks, thought that was what I would like. IRL I'm a fairly aggressive guy, ex amateur boxer, ex juco linebacker, not particularly long on subtlety, lol. Found out I hated tanking. My favorite classes ended up being Rogue types. I enjoy setting up my fights, picking battles carefully, etc. So yeah, I don't think there's much of a correlation between someone's real life persona and their choice of class.

My guild leader is female, and was one of the top geared and achieved tanks on my server throughout WOTLK. Two weeks into the xpac she doesn't show any sign of being dethroned. But yeah, she may be the only female tank I've come across. She's also a monster at PVP. And ironically, if you're into really skinny girls, shes very hawt IRL too.

Yep. My main gaming partner is female, and been in a lot more guilds than me, I would say the stigma of a female lead tank in a raid is less then before, and in many places doesn't exist (as it shouldn't), but there are still people and guilds that are kind of aholes.
That line of thinking is archaic and with as much information and instant information we have today, it's frankly embarrassing to even have it come up as a possible issue.

Half of my warriors have been gnome! My daughter's raid tank was a gnome. I still have screenshots of her wearing Imperial Plate. She looked like a toddler wearing her big brother's football gear!
Her tank is now a gnome DK, just like Mom.

That's true. I've met some very good female tanks... and some really bad ones, too. No different than the men really. Being a caster or a healer is more of a "feminine" role than being on the front lines bashing and taking hits - so naturally more women gravitate towards those roles I think. Personally I don't enjoy tanking at all. I don't like the responsibility of having to lead the group, especially if I'm with strangers or I don't know the dungeon... and tanking just isn't as much fun for me as dps or heals. It's just a matter of taste and what you enjoy doing.

I don't think men tank better than women or anything equally stupid like that, but there do seem to be less women that tank then say heal, or even dps, but everyone freaking dpses on some character so that doesn't count, lol.

10 Male Tanks - a few will be good, a couple will be awesome, most will be mediocre.
10 Female Tanks - most will be awesome, a few will be good and a couple will suck.
Why? More guys than girls tank. So you'll get a bigger "gene pool" in male tanks. The few girls who tank, are mostly going to have the tanking mindset and gonna be good, they're gonna know their gear, rotations, how to use CC, manage threat and so on. Why? Because most girls aren't gonna stick with something if they get picked on every time they do a crummy job so the crappy ones get weeded out faster. Guys will jsut toss ont their a shield and say pffft! I R TANK! And if someone says they suck, they'll ignore it. This is generaly speaking from my epxerience.
I'm a tank. I'm a freaking awesome tank. I LOVE it. I can't imagine doing anything else. My main is a prot pally, then DK, then Warrior. (I'm a glutton for plate repair bills, Blizzard's "repair fix" SUCKS! What were they thinking? Oh wait, they weren't) I have two protect pallies infact, horde and ally. I do it to do it well. I want to grab that agro and save the group by living through just about anything. Makes me go RAWR!
The few girls I know who tank are dead solid tanks. They rock. Of the guys I know who tank most are ok, a few are awesome. Of course I know about 20 guys to the 3 girl tanks.

I'm a guild raid tank. I'm asked to tank randoms regularly, etc.
Do they just don't want that direct level of responsibility/control?
I don't mind the "responsiblity" at all. I know what I'm doing and if I have a question about the abilites of a specific class, say for a CC situation, I'm not afraid to ask.
Are they pressured into other roles? eg healer?
Hahahaha. Oddly enough we have only 1 female healer in guld. Rest are males. And you couldn't pay me enough to go back to holy on my pally. Well 50k gold? Mmmm...tempting!

Flawed logic is flawed, total amount doesn't influence proportions. You have 100 "male tanks", lets say 30 are good, 20 are awesome, 50 are mediocre. You have 10 "female tanks", let's say 3 are good, 2 are awesome, 5 are mediocre. Proportions are the same. I don't buy that kind of sexual differences. Both sexes have the same amount of idiots, retards and good players.

So you think men and woman aer exactly the same? The same insticts, tendencies, aversions? If you read my entire post, you'd also see that I wasn't using logic. I was speaking specifically about MY experince in game.
I don't think one gender is more intelligent than the other, but I do think that men and woman react differently to certain things. There's nothing sexist about recognizing that woman are usually more nurturing or men more protective. It's pretty much that way with every species. It's not logic, wrong, wrong or deductive thinking, it's just the way it is. I dont' get why people make such a big deal out of defending one side or the other.

This is true, but I've also experienced terrible tanks (or healers or whatever) who precisely because they are a girl don't get the same type of criticism they'd get if they were a guy. It works both ways... though I do agree that girls tend to be more sensitive about criticism and will give up more easily if they feel they're doing a bad job. I suppose it's different depending on what type of guild you're in, too - in a serious raiding guild nobody's going to get much slack.

The real question is... out of the thousands of Gladiators over the years, how many of them have been women. Men are biologically designed to be competitive and are more inclined to want to solve problems with their fists. This translates somewhat into tanking (the best tanks are fairly aggressive IMO), but tanking can also be seen as more of a support role... but stuff like arena combat is pretty straight-forward competition + aggression. I'm sure there are examples of women gladiators, but I bet the numbers are well under 5% representation.
