What's the verdict? I hear they're adding spear, crossbow, etc to the racial mix now. Are they really going to let all these weapons remain better than staff in every way forever? Every month that goes by waiting on this makes it less likely that I'll ever return--old friends quitting, old clans dissolving, old mechanics ruinized.

Greetings,

We have had a lot of players chomping at the bits about our future racial plans. Many players want to plan out what they want to play and are waiting on creating new characters to do so. We recognize this and want to help them make those decisions by releasing some early designs on our racial roadmap.

First let me say that, like all Design Diaries, these plans are extremely early in their development cycle. We might have to abandon races if the art and animation tasks are not technically feasible. Although we are sharing our early design thoughts, this is in no way an actual feature announcement.

That said, we have some goals:
~ Introduce some cool new races.
~ Keep the races interesting but balanced.
~ Make existing races more compelling by providing some options.

We will be introducing new races, but we also want to give existing races some options to help with diverse play styles. To facilitate this, each race will have a sister race or a counter race with which they can adopt the racial skills of the race instead of their own. This second set of racial skills represent another facet of the racial culture that is reflected in the sister race. This will be done through the Temple of Forgetfulness; there will be new options to allow a race to change their existing racial skills to those of one other kindred race.

The new races will likely be the following, not necessarily in the order of release:

Empyrean
Players from this magical race are recovered from imprisonment in Portal Space, and have been weakened from their ordeal. They have taken refuge upon their return with the Isparian peoples.
Skill: Arcane Lore (Specialized)
Augmentation: Infused Life Magic

Undead
Players from this race are the walking dead from House Mhoire who once bore the curse of Rytheran. These undead have found an alchemical way to stave off the twisted magic curse that destroyed their House. Thanks to this purifying alchemy, they now walk the lands with free minds and hearts.
Skill: Alchemy
Augmentation: Critical Protection

Tumerok
Players from this hunter race are outcasts from the Hea Tumerok, free from enslavement at the hands of the Virindi.
Skill: Crossbow
Augmentation: +3% Critical Damage

Lugian
Players from this large earthen race are disgruntled members of the Laigus caste who have left Lugian society to travel among Isparians and improve their lot in life. The Lugian who leave to live among the Isparian races are sometimes drawn to learn skills of magic that are forbidden to the Lugians in their society.
Skill: Thrown Weapon
Augmentation: Increased Burden


In addition, all races now have another race that acts as their mirror. This sister race either shares an affinity with the race, or has a culture or nature that reflects another side of the race. For whatever reason, players can go to the temple of forgetfulness and trade racial skills with one other race.

The racial pairings are as follows:

Aluvian (Dagger, Assess Person) can change their racial skills to Crossbow.
Sho (Unarmed Combat) can change their racial skills to Deception.
Gharu'ndim (Staff, Item Tinkering) can change their racial skills to Thrown Weapon.
Viamontian (Armor Tinkering, Loyalty) can change their racial skills to Mace.
Umbrean and Penumbraen (Deception) can change their racial skills to Unarmed.
Gear Knights (Mace) can change their racial skills to Armor Tinkering, Loyalty.
Empyreans (Arcane Lore - Specialized) can change their racial skills to Alchemy.
Undead (Alchemy) can change their racial skills to Arcane Lore - Specialized.
Tumeroks (Crossbow) can change their racial skills to Spear, Assess Person.
Lugians (Thrown Weapon) can change their racial skills to Staff, Item Tinkering.

Again, this is all very early in the design stages. It may very well be that we need to cut some of these out or change them substantially. We felt players would benefit in this case from an early glimpse into our future plans.


So while staff might suck you can now opt to take thrown weapon instead.

I have no interest in taking Thrown Weapons on my Gharu mage or Gharu staffer. So now even Viamontians get a better melee weapon than Gharus? Somebody please tell Turbine that's terrible. It's twelve thousand miles from being a satisfactory state of affairs.

Special Properties: Olthoi Slayer, Attuned, Bonded, Biting Strike, Resistance Cleaving: Bludgeoning, Cast on Strike: Shock Wave IV, Ivoryable
pretty sure all the other ones are like slash cleaving and bludge bolt, or pierce/bludge/slash mixes, but never the same. staff has an upper hand vs olthoi in that regard!

When staff costs as much as war magic or sword, it will be worth having.

Who said anything about sword? UA and mace and crossbow and spear and dagger and thrown weapons are going to be free racials.

Maybe Turbine ought to have upped the level limit to 300+, upped the racial skill credit total to 8, and upped every racial weapon skill to 6 credits when they added Mace to the mix.

I.E.
6 Staff / 2 Item Tink
6 UA / 2 Item Tink
6 Mace / 2 Spec Loyalty
6 TW / 2 Spec Loyalty
6 Dagger / 2 Assess Person
6 Spear / 2 Assess Person
etc.

And then rebalanced damage accordingly.

However your wrong on this issue.

Is staff gimped. Sure it is. Don't like it be something else. You got options. Its what everyone else does.

Look 11 years into the game. They may add a quest item or two some of those items may be cool but staff is always going to be gimped.

Really you expect them to make spend time on staff when their may be one or two pure staffers in the entire game ?

In any case, pure staffers aren't the only ones hurting--just about every Gharu template is gimped compared to a race that can get spec Lore for free. My Gharu mage would be 6 credits in the hole compared to newly rolled characters. Heck, my Gharu staffer has 2 less credits than the same Undead staffer would. And even if, as you say, there's not enough pure staffers, there's certainly enough Gharu mages and bowyers and swordsmen in the game to justify some love to it as a secondary skill.

On a separate note, anyone have some screenshots of the new zombies? I can't find pictures of them posted anywhere.

You new what the skills were going in.

As far as new races having powerful weapons like race. You got a point however turbine addressed that and gave us sister racial skill this last patch.

Don't play. Theirs really nothing anyone can do about balance except the dev. You got 10 chars slot make a new char if you don't want to do that don't play. What else can anyone tell you.

making bow/xbow a racial weapon would be a bit too much for me. Theyre huge damage outputs and its a bit late in the game to be messing up templates that people have been working on for years now to truly have as "the best" build

its not that I feel that I'm losing. I don't consider it a debate. what can I do to change it? I just think this whole mentality that a template that he played for years is somehow not viable because a new race was introduced is stupid.

They introduced a new race nothing new in questing or the monsters in Dereth that would of made staff somehow less viable. It's about being more dominate then another player.

I have never seen the need to compete with other players on HG lets face it this isn't dt. I have always felt that games like these are not those types of games. Theirs really no high score or ranking system available to anyone. See its all subjective.

Since they introduced a new race I have seen post from chip whom I general respect and like talk about how HG is dying and the game sucks. He pretty much raged quit when he found out mace was the racial weapon. Now its "Look its not my fault what can I do to fix this ,see nothing like I said " argument. Its a waste of time because theirs nothing that anyone can say here. So it's not that I feel that I'm a know it all. I just feel frustrated at my friends inability to just play a game for fun instead of the need to compete with the rest of the server. Really that's the way I feel about it.

Its not a disrespect for chip its just frustration that he feels this way. Hey it's his money what can I do sad

What can he do ? Well lets see.

1. Play a different game go out with style. You have been playing for ten years go out with style or grace. That means you don't bash the game and in way the rest of us who must be stupid for playing the game.
2. Redesign your template staff isn't going to be what you think it should be get over it and adapt.
3. Make a new toon you want to be the most powerful player in the game ? You feel Gear knights are over powered ? Fine make a gear knight.

Really those are the best options I see for you. I'm not the one who defines this. People at Turbine. I'm just the one who may be stupid enough to point it out to you I guess.

I happend to have switch my mage plush from racial skill set of staff/item tink to TW, going to give it a shot,,, i still like my war melee d dagger spec though on jack (gharu),have no clue what this will bring but will be fun finding out
