Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Twice now I got this while browsing Wikia. "HTTP FakeAntivirus Install" The first time I had to do a hard reboot to stop the constant popup recycling despite having Norton and Ad-aware active. I ran two quick scans with Norton and Ad-aware then performed a full scan with Norton to be sure. The second time Norton managed to block it. Has anyone else run into this?

Well, there is always my mirror at http://www.virindi.net/ACCWikiMirror But unfortunately it can be up to a week or so out of date, since it is based on the database exports provided by Wikia and they don't do them too frequently. Also, they provide no export of image info and I haven't written a scraper for it yet, so most images are missing. To help these issues, each page on my mirror has a link at the top that goes to the same page on Wikia. On the other hand, it is fast and has no ads whatsoever. Personally, Wikia seems pretty sleazy. I have little trust in them.

I never get pop-ups from Wikia. Right now, I am using Windows 7 MS Security Essentials, SpywareBlaster, and Google Toolbar. Was using more before Windows 7 - ie Norton's, Malwarebyte's Anti-Virus, SpywareBlaster Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software! Simple, effective, trusted. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Download, install, run, update, enable all protections, then close. Update weekly, re-enable all protections, close. It does NOT run in memory. Simply blocks thousands of known bad sites.

sorry to say but i doubt you got that virus from acc wikki , and it happens to any computer with any antivirus running, the best way to avoid is ctrl-alt -delete and end program when it pops up, if its too late do what norton suggests,
Severity: HighThis attack could pose a serious security threat. You should take immediate action to stop any damage or prevent further damage from happening.DescriptionThis signature detects HTTP redirects and/or web pages which misleading applications use to attempt to lure users into downloading applications which may compromise the target host.Additional InformationMisleading applications intentionally misrepresent the security status of a computer. Misleading applications attempt to convince the user that he or she must remove potentially malware or security risks (usually nonexistent or fake) from the computer. The application will hold the user hostage by refusing to allow him or her to remove or fix the phantom problems until the 'required' software is purchased and installed. Misleading applications often look convincing - the programs may look like legitimate security programs and often have corresponding websites with user testimonials, lists of features, etc.AffectedWindows 98
Windows 95
Windows XP
Windows Me
Windows NT
Windows 2000
ResponseThe following instructions pertain to all current and recent Symantec antivirus products, including the Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus product lines.

1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
2. Update the virus definitions.
3. Run a full system scan.
4. Delete any values added to the registry.
5. Find and stop the service.

You may doubt it but I'd be hard pressed to agree with you. I was working on documents on the PC, grabbed my lunch and decided to surf the web while I ate. Opened one instance of Explorer 8 and selected the wiki from my favorites. I surfed the site a bit before going to the archery stuff in the wiki, when I got to the markman's garb page my Norton flaired up with the warning I posted on the SC board. If I had been surfing other sites prior to it I may agree with you, but I went straight to it from a fresh page and had not been on the net yet that day other than to access e-mail through my Outlook program.
Working on a fresh Windows 7 install which I just did a week or so ago so unlikely that I had latent bugs in the system waiting for a time release. As I said I was on Explorer 8 and I check for updates at least twice weekly so I was up to date on all of the essentials.
Doubt away but based on my past history with virus attacks (0) on the sites I'm typically on with that PC (pre-Win 7 upgrade), I'd say you are heading in the wrong direction.
I do appreciate the paste you gave to people on instructions to remove the virus if infected. I posted on SC just as a reminder for people to stay up to date because my Norton install stopped it before it got anywhere.
