I'm going to be traveling next week by plane to Canada with Brokk that will be just over 3 weeks. My head is spinning at the logistics of everything I need to bring with me. I did check with the airline and I'm allowed 2 pieces of luggage for me and 2 for Brokk. I have his birth certificate in hand as well. I did read up on the rules for bringing formula on the plane and how to help baby by feeding at departure and landing. I have a sling that he will be traveling in. My mother has purchased a car seat base so I don't need to bother bringing that. I'm bringing the items listed below. I'm looking for any advice or any items that I might have missed that are must haves while traveling with baby. Car seat Stroller Pack and Play bottle warmer Formula Bottles Diapers and wipes for flight, mom bought some so I dont have to bring that many. Clothing: PJs, onsies, pants, outfits, bibs, towel, face cloth, socks, sun hats, blankets Toiletries: Baby soap, lotion, sun screen, Documents Sanity

Honestly it depends on how long you're staying. Things I wouldn't bring for a trip 2 weeks or less: Stroller Pack and Play Also: Toiletries: Baby soap, lotion, sun screen, I probably wouldn't even bother, just buy some when I get there, not worth the security idiocy, spillage chances, etc. Sling is the #1 most awesomest thing you can use, which you already know, and when they're that little they can sleep anywhere, don't need to cart around a heavy pack & play, least not in the summer when cold/drafts aren't that big of an issue. Good luck with the trip, and hope you have a great time!! Maybe our weather will be a bit better here in general and it'll be more enjoyable.

just an idea this is what my sisters do when they fly with their kids. send the stroller and pack n play by ups/fedex so it will arrive there when you do. Saves room for other things. costs a lil more.
with the airlines they have restrictions on liquids being brought on the flight. Baby soap, lotion, sun screen, might be better bought there ??

I was planning on putting those in the the luggage, not carry on. I don't have much money to spare and since the airline said I could have that much checked luggage i'm not worried. I'm going for a week.

Are you going with your husband? If not, have him write a letter saying he is allowing you to bring the baby up to Canada. There have been a few incidences of child kidnapping between the two countries and the border guards sometimes ask.

I always thought traveling with my daughter when she was a newborn was much easier than when she got older. On the plane, just make sure the baby has something to suck on during takeoff and landing. We brought a binky along for Aime even though she didn't like them. She did suck on the binky when the pressure in her little ears started to build. Also, feeding the baby just before the flight helps since you can burp them during takeoff and that helps release ear pressure as well. Aime slept through travel when she was an infant. I found that I was really over prepared and had brought too much stuff with me 'just in case'. We are very fortunate, though. Aime has always traveled well and has been doing it since she was 3 days old. She was born in San Antonio and in her first couple of weeks, we covered about 3000 miles in the car. Now she travels back and forth to work/daycare with us and spends 2 hours a day in the car easily. Silver

You don't breastfeed? That makes things a lot easier. Whereever mommy goes, food is.

I'll gladly try breastfeeding again if you want to come do my chores, cook me my meals, take care of my pets and other things that need tending to cause i'm taking care of a house and working all by myself. Formula is also everywhere I need it to be. I'd love to breastfeed but I also love my sanity. Edit: I ended up driving cause I did need a passport for flying which was effective June 1st. He did very well, was a 9 hour drive but took us 12 with stops.

How does breastfeeding take more time than forumla feeding? Formula has to be prepared and is also much more expensive.

Heh I thought that too, but different strokes... I was so happy I was able to breastfeed, even though it was only 6 months for each of my girls. Never having to worry about carrying extra BS around, which I truly HATED. Now anyone have tips on traveling with an overly wiggly 2-year old and a 4-year old sister who fight all the time? ROFL so tempted to use gravol, but just can't bring myself to do it just to drug the kiddo...

She mentioned that she was working. That means toting around a 'milker' and all the other stuff you need to express breast milk, keeping it refrigerated or frozen, making sure caregivers have enough to feed the baby... it's got to be a pain. I was an adoptive mom so I fed Aime formula and it was quite easy, not only for us but also for our caregivers. Aime has grown up healthy and happy so even though breast milk is better, it's not mandatory. As far as traveling with young kids, I've found that portable DVD players with their favorite movies is a good way to keep them settled. Silver

Ahem. The pro's and con's of breast feeding.
You have to stop what you're doing right then and feed baby. Can't prepare a bottle in advance.
You have ot remove clothing, and be prepared ot change clothing when he spits up on your.
You have ot find a comfortable spot and make sure you take enough time for baby to fill up.
Let's not going into putting lansinoh on your nipples afterward, dealing with nipple shields if you're chafed, nursing pads in case you leak and really don't want all that greasey stuff on your bra or soaking through your shirt. And don't forget you need to do both sides. And burp baby. And then top him off.
I could go on. I love breast feeding but with my second I started supplimenting with formula. With an active two year old, a nice 20 minute break ever few hours just isn't possible.

Well getting the hang of breastfeeding is very time consuming to begin with. All I was doing all day long was breast feeding. Baby drinks his bottle alot faster than he drank from the breast. I also had a c-section to recover from. Trust me take away ALL your support and tell me how easy it is to start breastfeeding and maintain it while living an Army life with a fresh c-section. I have no spouse, no family and no in laws here to help me. I'm new to this unit so it's not like I have close friends either. My boy is doing just fine and developing well. I wish I could have breastfeed but after 3 weeks of trying and either feeding or pumping round the clock I was done. I can also have me a beer now :P Pally: I did end up flying to Arizona to visit my husband and I did bring the pack and play and the stroller. I think the stroller was not really needed. Most of the time I had him in the snugli. The pack and play was usefull, I would definitely bring that.

Ah didn't think about the snugli. Baby packs or slings are wonderful imo. I forgot the stroller once when we went on a trip and had not snugli, got tired of carrying the car seat around... /shudder Bought a new stroller.

Haha. I didn't mind bringing the stroller too much especially since the airline didn't charge me for my 5 checked items. It was nice to have but not really needed. There was tons of conseignment shops there too, I could have just bought one too. It was a lot of stuff but meh, was nice to have what I needed. I love the snugli. He likes it too.

Sometimes I forget how crappy it can be to be a mother in less progressive countries. - My wife has 1 year maternity leave in Ontario (all mom's do regardless of job) It often costs mother's more to go back to work and pay for daycare/formula/extra car gas than it does to stay off for a year with baby. - Midwives are covered and encouraged as part of our health care system. They drop in every few days after the baby is born to make sure everything is going well and answer any questions, help new mom's breast feed. - Due to the overwhelming research backing the benefits of breast feeding, breast feeding consultants come in the day after the baby is born to discuss breast feeding and show the mom how to obtain a proper latch, how to avoid chaffing(improper latches are usually the cause). There are also an abundance of mom's groups which you can find online. My wife goes out a few times a week walking or out for lunch with other mom's in the area, all met through mom's groups. I've offered to help out more with my little guy, but she handles everything. She won't even wake me up in the night to put the little guy to bed when he's being fussy... inspite of the fact that I've told her to because it's not fair that she does it all of the time. She also stopped pumping so that I could put him to bed every other night... because it was easier to just breast feed than prepare a bottle of it.

The sad part is that i'm from Canada. Thats where my family is at, Ottawa and Montreal. I moved here to the US 3 years ago. Everyone was telling me to go home to have the baby. lol I was already enlisted though and love my job. So I got all of 6 weeks off. Daycare is costing me 900$ a month (untill i can get a spot on base daycare). These are all things I would have loved to avoid but everything happens for a reason i suppose. My husband just Enlisted and has been in training since January until October. Then he comes home yay! Untill he deploys boo. Sometime you gotta make lemonade outta these lemons.

I certainly don't envy you the position you were put in. If someone told me I was only allowed 6 weeks off after a c-section, I would tell them exactly where they can shove it, and get a lawyer or otherwise find a way to be "allowed" to take a more appropriate amount of maternity leave. Obviously not everyone has the same choices. We have chosen to live for free with my dad, and all the sacrifices that entails so that I can stay at home and teach my girls proper Spanish before they start school. I might conceivably end up clinically depressed if I was only allowed to see my newborn baby for a couple hours a day because I'm working all the time. *shudder* Again... glad things are working out for you, especially because you mentioned your son is doing great, and that you have a job that you like. Those 2 things are pretty damn important in the grand scheme of things!!
