I did my second try on adding a wooden texture to my nephew, I like the new texture better... But it still doesn't look as good as i want it too! lol
So wondering if you could look at it and give me any ideas?
One thing i do want to do next time is break it up into more sections... i should have done the ears seperate i think.. i tried to make the wood look more contored around his head this time, as compared to the first try looking so flat.. but still looks off?
Should i have left the texture on the lips and eyes? maybe just lighter?
Anyway... any tips you or anyone else could give would really help for my next ty at it!
Heres my trys.. (Just posting links cause they maybe to big for kash?)

Wow, that's odd and cool all at once! I'd be tempted to try breaking up the whole face and giving each part a slightly different texture and shade. I think the first wood grain looks nicer, but the up and down grain works better, so maybe just spin the first one about a bit or tone down the contrast on the second one. I'd do the overall face, then take a different section of wood for the ears, lips, neck and eyes. Maybe try a different grain orientation on the smaller face parts and alter their brightness/contrast slightly. I love how his eyes match his shirt, I'd probably also try some spot colouring, have the entire background in sepia, the wood grain (skin tone and hair) in sepia then just his eyes and shirt really popping out in that gorgeous blue. Such a gorgeous little Pinochio

That's too funny. I was going to do the same thing with a pic of my neighbour.

I too prefer the wood used in the first image. The second one seems too harsh and well-defined, to me. I like the idea of using different texture in different spots, in order to make it look like he was "pieced together" out of different wooden parts. I would keep the actual wood type the same, just use different parts of the grain. Perhaps even manipulate it around areas like the nose and lips to give it a three dimensional feeling. Very interesting idea, for sure. (edit: I r spel gud!)

I'd just like to add that both of your are way better than my attempt which I gave up on, but because I tried, separating the areas really does work nicely

I put a bark texture on my own face... Quick! Call a dermatologist! It's not done yet, but I'll share.

I'm driving from Washington state to new jersey, then back to Chicago.. Then going to switch trucks.. So I'll be in a hotel sun or Monday and I'll work on my next try then.. I'll try a less deep cracks texture, and I think maybe breaking it up and say doing the nose as one piece might be a good idea, I can get more control over forming/warping it to make it look more like it wraps around it, I need to find a real face carved out of wood so I can see how the grain goes around it.. Maybe even throw in a dove tail joint! LOL
