Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

My youngest LOVES her grandma (my mom) so much. It was really nice when we lived two doors away from her, and of course it was hard to move, although it wasn't as difficult as it might have been because my mom deployed to Kuwait about a month before we moved (she's a full-bird Army colonel). My mom found out she was going to be right in our area for 3 days for a military conference, so she got a week of leave tacked onto the end of it so she could visit us, and omg the little one was sooo happy to see her grandma. She was glued to her for the whole week pretty much haha. Then came time for grandma to go, and ohhhh the tears. And I don't just mean sad tears, although there were some of those too...it was sad, mad, and "No, you CAN'T!" tears. We had to hold her, screeching and reaching, while grandma left, and then she just collapsed into a sobbing heap on the floor. I was holding her and hugging her, and she said in her little munchkin voice "Where's Grandma?" I told her that Grandma had to go to work. She cried a little more and then told me "I lost my Grandma! I can't find her!" and covered her little baby face with her little baby hands as her little chin trembled and she cried. It was so sad, and my heart ached for her, but at the same time it was adorable and funny too. Poor little thing heh.

The thing with my little one though is there is no such thing as halfway with her. Everything is 200%, regardless of what it is. When she's happy she's OMGHAPPY like almost manic. When she's sad or mad (and it's usually MAD) she's OMGWTF GONNA TAKE SOME NAMES and KICK SOME ASS MAD!!! And she can switch from one to the other in seconds. And she has always been like that. My first two kids came out all laid back and happy, she came out kicking, screaming and ANGRY lol. And so it has continued. It's somewhat better now that she can talk and can express herself much better. That has only alleviated her communications frustrations though. She still gets mad as hell when she doesn't get her way, which is rather often lol. However, I'd rather put up with the tantrums and anger now than a hellion spoiled brat now and later. Edit: so far the best thing we've come up with when she gets super mad and tantrum-ey is to tell her she needs to go to her room until she can be happy. Sometimes she will go and come out a few minutes later, much more cheerful, other times the minute we tell her to go to her room she will IMMEDIATELY stop the freak-out, smile, and say cheerfully "I want to be happy!" omg so funny. That doesn't always last long...but we know she understands what she needs to do, and that's important. She is the child that I'm going to try the "silence time" every day with. I don't know if it will help or not but it certainly couldn't hurt!

You know how people will describe themselves (or others) with one word? The one word that describes my youngest is: mercurial Main Entry: 1mer·cu·ri·al Listen to the pronunciation of 1mercurial Pronunciation: \(?)m?r-'kyu?r-e-?l\ Function: adjective Date: 14th century 1 : of, relating to, or born under the planet Mercury 2 : having qualities of eloquence, ingenuity, or thievishness attributed to the god Mercury or to the influence of the planet Mercury 3 : characterized by rapid and unpredictable changeableness of mood <a mercurial temper> 4 : of, relating to, containing, or caused by mercury

Awww, how awful. It's so hard to see your baby girl so sad. My little girl gets playtime alone with her grandparents twice a week and the few times we've been busy one day or the other, both Aime and grandma get pouty. Silver

Poppy is right, not all have or know what that kind of love is. My son has that with my mother. He also had it with my father. He was a paw bearer when he was 11 years old for my father. He can do NO wrong in my mother's eyes. As a matter of fact he just turned in a 5-6 page essay in his advanced english class called "The House On The Hill" (my mother's house).
I took a copy of it to her last weekend, and she sat at her table and balled the entire time she was reading. It is pretty heart wrenching to read it.
Your poor little one. That's unconditional love right there. Grannies are WONDERFUL!

My heart goes out to all the grandparents that can't spend a lot of time with their grandkids. I can't imagine not living close to mine. Or not being able to watch them every day.
My daughter tells me all the time what a huge favor I did for them, by moving out here and caring for the girls.
Pfft... no-brainer on my part.

Is that something to do with the boy scouts, pkhere? (I was thinking the other day, I wonder how old you have to be to get involved, my son just turned four Monday.) My parents live eight hundred miles away from us. They hate it, but I grew up about four hundred miles away from every bit of family I had besides my parents and sisters. I wouldn't know any other way to grow up. :/

Jennifer my son is going to be 19 next month, and in college. He spent every Saturday night at my parents from the ages of around 5-14. I enjoyed that one night a week with my husband, and that was my parents special time with our son. My father rarely left their house because he was ill. My father died when he (our son) was 11 years old. Our son and my mother are really close. That bond grew even deeper after the death of my father. The essay he wrote is for one of his college classes.
He wasn't in boyscouts or anything, but he was big into sports growing up, and still enjoys some.

Same here with the family. Both my parents left the midwest for CA when they were young. So that was pretty much it. I never knew grandfathers. Only met grandmothers a few times before they died. Lots of cousins, aunts and uncles that I barely knew/know.
My mom loved watching my daughter. She was pretty sick by the time my son was born. She died when he was about 6 months old. My dad died when I was pregnant with him. My bro died the year before the first grandkid was born.
I always wanted a big family. Lots of kids and relatives running around. My brother and the sister in law never married or had kids.

I hear you guys... I am so lucky to have all the grandparents nearby. We live in my dad's house right now, he has a nice big house and loves having us around, especially his grandkids obviously! My mom lives in England right now, but it's not often more than 3 months go by that she can't come back for a week or two to spend with us all. Both the girls usually spend Friday overnight at my MIL's house, which is a huge break for me, and wonderful for them too! <3 grandparents, I was unlucky enough to be 1000s of miles from mine growing up. They were in Argentina, we were in Canada! We had some great visits both ways though. A nice long month in December out in the southern hemisphere RULES while it's winter here!

3 of my grandparents were gone before or just after I was born. My remaining grandmother was in a home already, she's gone now of course. My mother's brother had vanished, he turned up when I was a teenager, apparently he'd been living on the streets of Montreal for 13 years. My father's sister wasn't close enough to help. I have two cousins and a sister. We don't even have to put a leaf in the table for family reunions. --- My in-laws are 2.5 hours away but they visit about once a month. My folks are too far and too old anyway. My sister would be a great help but she's 6+ hours away. Wife's brother is in town and he's a fun babysitter. We haven't taken advantage of that option much though. We will.

Pk, that's really awesome. I barely know any of my extended family. I sort of know my grandparents, I've grown up seeing them four or so times a year. I wish airline prices would go back down, I could totally convince my parents to visit more often.

my older daughter is a pretty intense kid too. her emotions are like a roller coaster -- when she's up she is REALLY up, and when she is down it's like the world is ending. and when the tantrums were more common, they were EPIC, they'd go on for 40 minutes or more. it's getting a little easier now that she is nearly 5 and can communicate so well. but she is still a total drama queen. anyway, I'm sorry your little one had to go through that heartbreak but it's nice that she loves her grandma so much. hope they will get to see each other again very soon.
