as for your actual question, Google for Free Software Downloads or something
cnet/download is one good place, major-geeks is another, etc
there are a lot of software and freeware and shareware sites out there.

It was started by a man years ago. it has all kinds of things in it.
He died a few years ago and his family keep on the tradition.
He was dedicated to finding good free or cheap programs for people to use. You will need to give an e-mail address to join. But it just generates a news letter with the most recent finds.
