So, we finally have West Nile officially showing in our county (Western Oregon) this year. I've vaccinated the horses for the last couple of years now. But we are great bird lovers. We've had a friendly pet crow w/ us for the last couple of months (thrown out of the nest early and made our backyard home).

I don't want to be paranoid about it. We do have quite a few mosquitoes around every year.

Hubby doesn't want me to put up a new bird bath, or a new bird feeder.

I'd like to.

Your opinions?

Thanks. happy

If you change/flush the water twice a week, mosquitos shouldn't be an issue as far as I remember.

It's when you leave the water to become stagnant that mosquitos will breed in it.

Not only check your bird baths but any other standing water even the tiniest amount can be a breeding pool. old tires, buckets, anything that will hold water. If you dont have anything like that around I would not worry. Another thing you can do is look into making some bat houses. Bats eat like a gazillion mosquitos a night.

Thanks for the advice all. happy

While west nile has been prevalent elsewhere, it's just now really showing up in the bird pops. in our western Oregon county. I've been quite aware of it, as we also have horses, and like I said, they've been getting the vaccine for the last couple of years.

Just a tad leery, as almost everyday the last couple of weeks, there's been news of more birds dying around the area/state. Our latest victims are the grouse, and I hate to see them being affected. They are already somewhat endangered.

Anyway, I'm keeping things clean, etc.

Just got a bit paranoid for a bit!

Esty
