Subject: Flickering Decal buttons
Just installed Decal on a new laptop and I'm getting some odd behavior. I heard some others might have seen this, but I didn't see anything looking 10 pages back. When I open up a decal screen (Tank, Quest Timer, etc) the buttons and list entries will flicker in and out. I can still select things and Decal will work, although if I leave a window open too long I will get a hardware crash. I know this is a video card problem, but I haven't the fogiest notion where to start. Any suggestions?

All I could suggest would be try the latest NVidia drivers as a guess;

ForceWare Release 90
Version: 91.31
Release Date: June 23, 2006
WHQL Certified
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.31.html

Your running;
[DriverVersion] : 6.14.0010.8469

No guarantees but can it hurt to try it?

I have the same problem, and have found that it doesn't happen in windowed mode. Since I prefer to play in windowed mode anyways, I haven't tried to figure out what's wrong. There's a good chance that this problem will go away with the new view system for Decal, but that won't be ready for at least a few months.

This is a known issue with dual core AMD chips. Decal devs have been able to reproduce this (see decal official forums). Is your new laptop dual core?

Yes, as a matter of fact it is a dual core. It is one of the new dual core Intel chips. I'm a little hesitant to try Sucamarto's advice, since this nvidea is not quite the same as the cards used on desktop machines. I know ATI uses a unified driver, but I wasn't sure if Nvidea does. Since I use this machine while I travel (which is a lot), screwing it up would be a bad idea. happy

I'm going to try the windowed mode to see what happens.

NVIDIA has a unified driver architecture for desktop graphics cards, but typically leaves laptop card driver updates to the laptop manufacturer. They do have drivers for the GeForce Go 7800/7900 series, but yours is a 7400, so I'm not sure. However, you may want to check your laptop manufacturer's site to see if they have an updated driver.

I get this problem too (AMD X2 processor) but the annoying part is that I get it only randomly. One session it is fine and the next and I have a flicker.

Only really annoying with plug-ins that have lots of buttons.

Hmm, I just thought of something that may help, but I haven't tried it myself. Basically the idea is to set the processor affinity of AC to a specific core. I did this to fix problems I was having with City of Heroes before the CoH devs updated it to better support dual core processors.

Here's a general how-to I found to use imagecfg, which lets you permanently set the processor affinity of a program: http://www.robpol86.com/Pages/imagecfg.php (here's another how-to: http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=187768 ).

Be sure to back up acclient.exe before modifying it with this utility.

As an aside, this website is incorrect about what values to use for CPU's beyond the second one. It shouldn't matter here, but just to be complete:
0x1 = CPU0
0x2 = CPU1
0x4 = CPU2
0x8 = CPU3
Or in general, 2^(CPU number) in hex.

this isn't a dual core only issue. i have a single core and get this problem.

the 'solution' i've found is that eventually at one point it's gonna semi-stop flickering. at that point completely exit the game and enter it again and it will be normal.

Well I tried the windowed mode, and things work correctly. I'll just sit tight and hope a future update fixes things.

I do have the latest driver from the Dell site, but I guess the Go 7800 doesn't fit in this small form factor, so I get a 7400. Performance is still amazing though.
