I have no idea where to start. Is there a website that could help with a good accurate step by step procedure. I could google it, yes, but I wouldn't know if it was correct or not wink

dig out the path first, place some 2 by fours boxed up and stack the bricks in there like you would a house with cement.

I'd just ask any Home Depo guy, they will pretty much hook you up exactly what you will need for the job not to mention point you into direction for step-by-step do it yourself instructions

Familyhandyman.com is generally a good resource; Google can probably give others. Assuming you're not going to use a concrete base, you'll want a good sand base. You should also rent a compactor (not sure if that's the correct name) to help set the bricks well into the sand or dirt base--you want that path to be as steady and rock-solid as poured concrete, and it can be if you take the time to do a good job, with the right tools.

I've watched shows talking about those techniques and it looks pretty cool when they are done.

We planned out the pattern...plotted everything ahead of time.
Framed the pathway and laid out a packed sand bottom, being careful to level and check everything as we went...laid the bricks from there, filled and packed the spaces, and it held up wonderfully.

Wish I could have moved it w/ me to our new house! (So much to do, so little time/money! hehe)...

This is an excellent resource: http://www.diynetwork.com/

If you have cable TV, they also have programs that cover a LOT of home projects.

Good luck to you.

diy is soooo great

and after seeing it done - realllly make sure to get a compactor and a good base of sand really pressed into your guide box or however you frame it out... I've seen brick paths sink from folks not taking enough time on that step!

My mother in law had her sidewalk taken out infront of her house and made a red brick walkway herself. She used sand and bricks after she dug the area out she wanted to brick. It looks cool. A man that lives down the street had his concrete driveway taken out because of so many crack from aging. He red bricked his driveway and that looks very cool.

I am thinking about what to do for our backyard in the next couple years, and I really like the idea of a brick or stoney type patio...kind of curving and whatnot. The thing is, we have a 10x10 patio just outside the back door, just a cement block, and it has an overhang with two big ugly square pillars on the outside, and it's attached to the house on the other side. It's actually a part of the house...it has wiring in it, a light fixture, shingles, etc. And I hate it.

So...I'm not really sure what to do with that part of it. Along with the brick/stone patio I'd like to build up a nice covered area around it, but that thing in the middle is going to be a real issue I think. I don't know how to take down the pillars and the overhang without messing up wiring...I'm afraid to touch it! tongue The cement is a problem too, I think...it's right up against the side of the house. So I am not sure if I can really remove it without causing problems hehe.

Bleh!

We are having our pool removed from the back yard. I want to landscape my back yard after its gone. Our son doesn't use the pool much anymore. Too busy running around with his friends now. My husband and I would rather have a nice back yard to be able to enjoy than keeping a pool cleaned now. hehe
