GoArrow v1.0.0.0 Alpha
GoArrow displays an arrow on your screen that points towards coordinates that you specify. This is very handy if you have to run to coordinates with obstacles in the way (like mountains), or if you're just directionally-challenged like me =D

GoArrow also has the ability to find a route between any two locations in Dereth, as well as look up locations' details from the Crossroads of Dereth atlas.

What's new in v1.0.0.0 Alpha
* Completly rewrote the plugin in C# 2.0.
* Added new arrow images, but didn't port over the old arrows except for the Chrome default.
* Added route finding ala Oracle of Dereth.
* Included a temporary workaround to a bug in Decal 2.9.4.0. GoArrow will need to be updated for the next public release of Decal.

I double checked your site, I have all that is needed to run this but it doesn't show up on my decal bar. what am i doing wrong?

Never mind, I got it. For some reason I had to reinstall decal. Strange as I know I keep all my plug ins up to date.

Anyway, thanks for your hard work, great plugin

Post an export, Talen. If you just installed the .NET Framework 2.0, you might want to try uninstalling Decal and GoArrow, then reinstalling Decal then GoArrow.

[Edit] Ok =)

Uninstall Decal, and Re-install Decal making sure that the Decal .NET Lifetime Service is installed. Without it, the vast majority of programs written in C#/VB.NET will not work. You'll probably have to re-install the plugins too.

all that just to make one program work??

all the other plugins work great in fact if I had to choose I guess I need to let go of go-arrow cause I need thte others to work as well as they do now. not really willing to compermise then working.... too bad.

Without the Decal .NET Lifetime Service, none of the plugins that use Decal.Adapter will be recognized, or work. This is pretty much most of the plugins written in C#, and VB.NET

I now have TWO plugins installed that are not It! (for the curious, the other is Quest Timer)

I love it, and I am REALLY gonna love getting it installed on my wifes computer.

A couple of options to think about for the future...

Add a 'Last corpse' arrow, if you play like I do, it will get a LOT of use.

Add the ability to /f or /t the coords to others, in a format both human readable and that will be recognized by Go Arrow to automatically set the arrow of all fellow members using it.

For routing, add the ability to use town gems as a starting point.

And if the arrow could be 3d (foreshortened so it appears horizontal instead of vertical) like that would be awesome.

I think im missing something when setting up Go Arrow, how do you get Go Arrow to use your recalls, lifestone, house and mansion as starting points? I have the correct coords set in for all of them but for some reason it wont use them as start points.

Example
My villa is about 5k from stonehold (2min run at most) when standing at the villa and clicking here for the start and setting stonehold as end it has me starting at the Sub and hitting 4-5 other waypoints with a total distance that is longer than the run from my villa to stonehold.

Even if I havent missed something ( and im sure I have) I will continue to use this plugin. It is exactly what I have been hoping for. Thank you for putting your time into it.

If I understand what you're asking correctly, then here's how to get them to work.

If you have them turned on to be used by GoArrow (set by a separate button below the window) then the coords should be set automatically when you use the recall. If not, do the following...

1. In the window tab that shows the recalls, highlight the recall you want to set.
2. Below the window is an input box, either click on the "here" button or hand enter the coords in this box in the same format as used in the above display of recalls.
3. Click on the "add" button.
4. That's it.

Whether or not the recall is actually used depends on the route you're generating. But, by setting them up as listed above, they were always used (when appropriate) for any of the test runs I ran through GoArrow yesterday.

I had a problem similar to yours yesterday because the first time I set up my house/allegiance specific recalls I kept forgetting to click on the "add" button.

There's currently a command that will /f or /t your current coords in a format that's human-readable and that GoArrow will turn into a link. It wouldn't be too hard to make it also possible to send the arrow's destination coords.

For routing, add the ability to use town gems as a starting point.

You can already do this. Just add the portal gem's coords to the Start Locations list on the Route Finding > Settings tab.

And if the arrow could be 3d (foreshortened so it appears horizontal instead of vertical) like that would be awesome.

The software I used to make the arrow images (Fireworks) doesn't do 3D. I haven't found a way to make it do a passable 3D-ish arrow like you described.

Digero, I love the new GoArrow, especially the route finder. That allowed me to remove ElTank.

I have noticed a problem though. Namely, when switching between toons GoArrow quite frequently seems to get confused and forget where its support files (the arrow files and settings.xml etc.) are located. When the toon is loaded into the game GA shows up on the Decal bar, but the arrow is no longer displayed on the screen and the route finder is non-functioning. When this happens, for example when changing the arrow graphic, an error message is displayed stating the arrow is not visible because GA couldn't locate the graphic files.

The only way to fix it, until the next time it happens anyway, is to completely exit AC to the desktop and restart.

Here's my Decal export:

Do you use a series of images for the arrow position, or do you rotate a single image?

If the first, I could give it a try happy If the second, it will never work with out some 3d programming.

That's odd. Could you look in the GoArrow folder for errors.txt and paste its contents? If it's really long, just post the last few errors (or ones that look relavent). If errors.txt is not there, then GoArrow hasn't logged any errors.

I'll look and see if I can replicate the problem you're having.

It actually can be either, but for all but the "Simple" arrow, it's the first. In the arrows/ subfolder of the GoArrow folder, there's a folder for each arrow. The name of the folder is the name of the arrow. Inside the arrow's folder, each frame is a PNG image named arrow_f**.png, with the ** replaced by a 2- or 3-digit number (01-99 are 2 digits, and 100+ are 3 digits). You can have as many or as few images as you want, but if there's only one image (named arrow_f01.png), GoArrow will take that image and rotate it on the fly.

is the 2 or 3 digit number degrees and you choose the closest? Or do you use a range percentage? (ie, if number 1 through 4, 1 is north, 3 is south)?

It's possible that there's a bug in the route-finding code. I'll take a look at it.

There was a bug, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I had forgotten to add in the extra run distance associated with using the start locations (by default, Abandoned Mines has an additional 1km run associated with it, since you need to run through the dungeon). Not taking into account that extra run distance, it's shorter to use the route generated by the plugin than it is to run from your villa to stonehold happy . I just fixed this.

I had an errors.txt message once, but it got discarded during the process of finding out why acclient.exe was crashing to the desktop as soon as I killed a critter (it turned out that Buzzard was causing acclient.exe to crash as soon as I killed anything). Ever since then, even though the inability of GA to reload its files after a drop to the logon screen has occurred many times, errors.txt has not been recreated. If it ever does show up again I'll post a copy of it.

-----------------------

These will either be a couple of stupid questions, or a lack of knowledge on my part, but....

For the hell of it, after reading the above, I removed all but "arrow_f01.png" in the Red Glass folder (the arrow I like best) and ran GoArrow. Yup, just like you said, GoArrow happily used just that one image and rotated it as needed.

So, given the above, here's the questions...

If image 01 of a given arrow shape is all that is needed for the plugin to work, why include images 02-xxx???

Is it just to make the arrow movement look smoother??? If so, do you load all of the shapes into a buffer so as to effectively remove the time it takes to load each image???

Mind you, I'm not complaining about it or saying one way is wrong and the other right, I'm just wondering why you chose that method for the first four arrow shapes, but not the fifth (or vice versa :-).

In short: eye candy happy .

All of the arrows except "Simple" have shading and drop shadows that make the arrow look more realistic as it rotates. If you look at the arrows as they rotate, you'll notice that the light appears to reflect off them differently at different angles (as if the light is coming from a fixed point, rather than rotating with the arrow). Pre-rendering the images also allows them to rotate around a point that's not exactly in the center of the image. In the case of the Simple arrow, there is no shading, reflection, or drop shadow, so it works to just rotate a single image.

Rotating an image on the fly is slightly slower, but looks smoother (it can rotate the arrow to any angle it wants). Using pre-rendered images uses slightly more RAM (probably about 3-5 MB for Chrome, less for the others) and more choppy (it can only rotate the arrow to one of 180 angles for Chrome, or 90 angles for the other arrows), but is slightly faster since it doesn't have to do any rotation of the image. I chose to make it support both options so I could include the Simple arrow without increasing the size of the download very much happy

And yes, when you choose a new arrow, it loads all of the images into RAM -- it doesn't read from the hard disk every frame.

This plugin rules beyond all other ruling, Digero.

It routefinds better than any other plugin ever has.

It's simple to use -- the interface is intuitive and I didn't have to read docs to figure it out.

It doesn't do crap I don't want it to do by default. It's non-intrusive.

Plus, it's got a spiffy arrow.

Coasty and Strider: are you using any other .NET plugins? What happens if you disable all plugins except GoArrow? If disabling all other plugins works, try re-enabling them one at a time until GoArrow breaks again, to determine which one(s) aren't working with GoArrow.

Strider: are there any other recent error messages that look different (i.e., that don't start with System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException)?

Other then this one they all seem to start with that.

System.Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObjectException: COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used.
at Decal.Interop.Filters.IWorldEvents_EventProvider..ctor(Object )

The above seems to be the last entry for every group of errors.

I use impinventory, is that a NET plugin?

Ill try disabling all but goarrow and see if happens.

Ok I turned off all plugins but goarrow, didn't seem to have the problem. I turned other plugins on one at a time testing a few logins with each before moving to next one. Soon as I turned on Imp Inventory the disappearing arrow problem popped up on changing toons.

To be honest, I don't know which ones besides GoArrow are .net based plugins.

Tomorrow afternoon I'll turn off all but GoArrow and give it the workout you asked for. It's too late to do anything tonight.

Coasty do you use Imp Inventory? With just that and goarrow turned on I get the problem. With just goarrow on I don't.

Yeah, as a matter of fact I do...

Hmmm.... Let me do a really quick check and see if turning off ImpInv off solves the problem.

<10 or so minutes later>

Well, a quick spot check shows you're right, so far as I was able to test anyway (a bad night for getting acclient crashes every 4th or so time when switching toons). Anyway, the three successive times I managed to get logged out and into another toon, before gettin an acclient crash, GoArrow's arrow always showed up. Until I turned off ImpInv I always lost the arrow display upon logging in the next toon. So it's nice to see which plugin is causing GoArrow the grief.

Of course, that doesn't explain why it's happening but, what the heck, at least it's a pointer to the problem.

Nice catch, and thanks for saving me an hour or so of testing things.

I double checked this morning and it's definitely the GoArrow/Imp Inventory combination that's bollixing things up.

Until Phatlewt is fixed I can live with swapping ImpInv in and out as GoArrow is a whole whopping lot more useful to me than ImpInv. Heh, now if I ran a buffbot/market place vendor that would probably be a different story.

I figure it won't take Digero long to fix things.

Hellbound, are you in a country that uses a comma "," as the decimal symbol? If so, there will be a fix for that problem in the next version of GoArrow. If you want to use GoArrow for now, you'll have to change the decimal symbol to a period "." in the Regional and Language Options control panel. (Thanks to Losado for finding that problem).

I just downloaded the new program and could not get it to show up in the decal bar. I've done everything you suggested so far: Uninstalled all plugins, including Decal itself (even ran the Decal Clean Reg prog). Reinstalled all plugins, including Decal and GoArrow. I've also repaired .NET 2.0 (before uninstalling Decal) (I did have it installed before).

Oddly enough, when I hit 'Export', Decal crashes, soooooo I guess I can't give you that... I'll keeping tinkering around but thus far I've been unlucky. However, during all of this I did get the PopulationFilter to work grin Also, all of my other plugins work again as well.

Any ideas? I'll keep fiddling with things, if I'm successful I'll try to report what I did to fix it.

edit :: If it's any consolation, I'm running XP w/ SP2 and all updates, and all the required programs listed on your site have been installed before attempting to install GoArrow.

Hmm, a crash when exporting is a bad sign heh. You might want to make a thread about that on the Decal forums -- I really have no idea what could cause that. As far as getting GoArrow to work, you've done everything I'd suggest from how you've described the problem... Does it say <No DLL> for GoArrow in Decal? Are the .NET Lifetime Service (under Services) and the Decal.Adapter Surrogate (under Surrogates) installed and enabled in Decal?

OK, here's the odd part. When I reinstall Decal, it updates the memlocs as its supposed to. After updating the memlocs it shows the GoArrow Version number. BUT, Decal will NOT show up IG whatsoever. In the Decal window, CharStats Filter, World Object Filter, Decal Inject Gateway Service, Decal Networking Service, and Version 1 Surrogate have a red X by them. I can uncheck them, and recheck them and a black check shows up, but Decal still doesn't show up IG.

I've tried copying the complete Decal DIR from another PC, and Decal starts working correctly as it did before, except GoArrow does not show up. After doing this, the .NET Decal Lifetime Service is checked, the Decal.Adapter Surrogate is checked, and all my other plugins do show up IG and work correctly, minus GoArrow.

Now, Export DOES work before I copy Decal from another computer. Here is the output:

Just for kicks.. I downloaded this yesterday. It's pretty darn cool.

One feature that I'd like to see.. add a route to the arrow. When you've gotten to one point, click on the hud, and it'll show the direction of the next one.

I agree that would be a great feature, especially when big obtacles are in the way.

The only real outstanding issue for me is the routing. It comes up with some real funky answers at times.

I've noticed when routing to somewhere on the ML plains, it doesn't tell you to take the Base portal to get up top... same thing with routing to the Insatiable Eaters (125+) you have to run around via Fiuns Outpost.

These aren't really "funky" routes, but mainly due to, well, physical objects in the way that you can't run straight from A to B.

But then again, I'm not sure even OoD knew to route around physical obstacles either. Hmm. Just a thought I suppose.

Anyhow I did finally get the plugin to work and its awesome!

I've noted a number of times it has given impossible routes. I'll double check the other kinda stuff I found, seems like more than one had me running way out of my way to get someplace close by.

Route finding doesn't take into account any kind of terrain obstacles -- it assumes that it's possible to run between any two points on the map that are within a certain distance (50km by default). I'm considering a few options to improve the algorithm to deal with this, but it might end up slowing it down significantly.

It also weights using portals as equivalent to running a certain distance (0.4km by default; in reality this depends on the character's run speed, your computer's speed, and your internet connection). That'll make it less likely to use a portal if there's a route that's only slightly longer by running, and will probably take less time if you just run.

Still though, if you find a funky route, post it.

Arkayas said he found a problem with ImpInventory and made a fix, but complied it with a version of decal that hasn't been released yet, which means it doesn't work with the current public release of decal. He said he'd compile it with the current release, but I haven't heard back from him.

A last functionality to add to this fantastic plug in could be to get the possibility to find our path in a dungeon with a 3D map coming from ACmap. a red dot showing the player /fellow on the map could be a must.

Many Thanks for your work.you make a great job

Locating within a dungeon on a map from ACMaps can be VERY difficult as there really is no standard to many maps on the site, let alone being able to determine exactly where you are in relation to a picture.

In order for that to work, there would have to be some extra data associated with the map giving a direction and a starting point as a reference... it would also most likely need some sort of "scale" as the size of 1 "block" can change from map to map..

as you can see, it isn't very feasible to in real-time "locate" you on an image map. Magellan was good for this because it calculated the map in real-time based on the actual dungeon walls.

Some 'concept' work has been done by Greg Kusnick that shades areas that are impassable. It's very early stuff, but a neat concept.

It is theoretically possible for this same technology to shade floor blocks inside a dungeon, leading the way happy

However...the stress is on 'concept'. There are currently no plans as to when (if ever) it will be completed. But it does make for an interesting idea.

as i am not a king developpers like yours but only an AC fan and a COO of a telecom compagny passionate by your works the only thing that i can do is to find some funding to do it if needed. time to investigate and to develop this kind of program sometime need money....and time

Something which I always thought should be part of routing in these sort of plugins would be to assign different weights to certain portals. For example:

Shoushi to Sanamar: 0.4k
- the time it takes to go through the portal and watch das blinkenlights is approximately 0.4k of running for the average character, as Digero said

Abandoned Mines to Shoushi: 2k
- it's a quick, simple run to the bottom of sub, but it still takes around 15 seconds (actually probably more like 20), plus the time for two portal trips. Is 2k enough?

New Sub to anywhere: 2k
- about the same as old Sub, and while it can be dangerous for lower toons, that doesn't figure in really

Desert March to Small Black Hill: 4k
- a long run through this dang dungeon, with some excellent useful portals at the bottom such as Small Black Hill. Is 4k enough??

Would be a nice feature, and you would only need apply these to exceptional dungeons -- most portal listings are quick, normal place-to-place ports.

Like Drakier said, it's not possible to figure out where your character is in an ACMaps map without extra information that translates from a dungeon landblock to a pixel on the image. While it'd be possible to gather this information, it'd probably be very time consuming.

That said, I had been planning to add the ability to view an ACMaps dungeon map for the dungeon you're in (or any dungeon). It wouldn't show your location on the map, but at least you'd have the map. There's also the possibility of generating a Magellan-style map of the dungeon, but I'm not exactly sure how that's done.

I've also been working on an interactive, detailed surface map of Dereth, similar to those in other games like AC2 (at least, I think I remember AC2 having something like this -- I only played the trial).

As far as donations go, I (and most other Decal/Plugin devs) do this as a hobby and won't ever charge money for plugins. If you'd like to donate though, I have a PayPal link on my site happy

With the way GoArrow currently works, you can only specify additional running distance for start locations (though that is broken in the current release tongue ). It would be possible to add the ability for the user to specify additional running distance associated with any location, but that may be more effort than it's really worth, and there's no reliable way to add defaults for that.

In the next release, "Underground" Portals (ones that require you to go through a dungeon) are going to have twice the portal running distance associated with them (0.8km instead of 0.4km by default), since they actually involve going through 2 portals.

If you are addign info for subway type dungeon portal nexus do not forget Umbral Halls, it does have 20 portals, and the time needed to dodge the shadows and idols is above zero if you are timing stuff.

It would be nice if you had a choice to use data from ACSpedia, too. It's so much more descriptive and easier to add information to the database.

The CoD data is missing a lot of stuff and has errors.
For example, in Umbral halls, CoD doesn't have any info on which direction to go for a particular portal.
Their location for Clemenza is wrong.
When I try to add or correct info on CoD, my email is rejected with a vague "not a member..." error.

However, there is a slight problem with the ACSpedia data export using any mode (http://www.acspedia.com click instructions)
The integer values representing coords for any entry that had updated coords are incorrect, but the textual values are correct.

Thanks again.

I emailed Geomancer a while ago about getting data from ACSpedia and never heard back from him. I had been planning on allowing you to choose which database to use, but I couldn't find how to get the data from ACSpedia in XML format. If you can either get in contact with him or give me a URL that exports ACSpedia data in XML format, let me know.

AC Spedia has various export modes, to my knowledge they are:

http://www.acspedia.com/places/cgiGetLoc=places.aspx?mode=zx&date=<mon>/<day>/<yr> (used by zExplorer)
http://www.acspedia.com/places/places.aspx (AC Explorer 3.x)
http://www.acspedia.com/places/places.aspx?mode=acx22c (AC Explorer 2.x)

and I think there is one for Oracle of Dereth as well. I'm using the AC Explorer 3.x URL myself and use a regular expression to filter each line (and convert it to the CoD xml format for internal storage). Afaik there's no XML export.

[edit]
See http://thelostcorpses.com/derethexplorer/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15&highlight= for the Oracle of Dereth URL: http://www.acspedia.com/places/places.aspx?mode=ood

When I attempt to submit a new entry to CoD I get this bounce:

Did you try using this page? http://ac.warcry.com/index.php3?content=feedback

I did send a message about this error so someone can look into it. The above link worked for me.

Well that has to be the most polite error message I've ever seen!

I'll look into it immediately, it may have just been a hiccup in the system.
Thanks Rascal & Maddy for pointing that out!

when my search on: http://ac.warcry.com/atlas/search.php found no matches.

I'll give this a try it looks good. I don't need the arrow I need the Route Finding since Oracle of Dereth doesn' work anymore.

Just wondering, does this Update the locations using acspedia or acexplorer or something?

It gets data from Crossroads of Dereth. There's a chance I'll add the option to use ACSpedia instead, if it's not too hard.

Probably not before the next version of Decal, though it seems like that may be pretty soon. I've been on vacation this week with only my laptop, so I haven't worked much on GoArrow.

There are still a few features I want to add to the maps, like actually showing locations and routes on the Dereth map.

I downloaded the version on your site. After I install it, in decal it says <no dll>, if I browse to the folder it says "failed to register".

Whats the deal?

You need to install the .NET Framework 2.0 (link on my site). Then uninstall and reinstall decal, being sure to install the .NET Adapter with Decal.
