since they're updating the billing system.. probably not. Unless Decal pulls our financial records from Turbine.

Hmmm. Then, WHY would it take an entire day to impliment what I would think to be relatively minor changes to the Authentification / Billing type stuff? Any why couldn't they test it out on their back-up systems in advance of implimenting them on us? An entire day of downtime for what seems to me to be relatively minor seems a bit... excessive?

you think upgrading a billing system is minor?

I'd say that billing is harder and more critical than the game servers themselves.

If they botch up a game server, they just have to re-load a little software..

if they botch up the billing systems, they're completely screwed!

I am not belittling the difficulty involved... just curious why they didn't create their new billing software and put it on a mirror server and test it out there. Or, who knows, maybe they did. It just strikes me as something that say - ENTER LARGER COMPANY NAME HERE -would have all ironed out and tested before bringing any servers down in the first place. Then again, Turbine may very well not have the resources for something like that.

Regardless, I am glad to hear that Decal should be allright. Now that I don't have to manually buff anymore, I find that I have grown dependant on it again.....=P

most likey they did have a test system created and tested, but they don't have the resources to test something as full-scale as the real system.

when deploying real live systems, things can happen which were unaccounted for, or otherwise problematic.

A lot of times things can sometimes not connect up properly, or the scale of the upgrade can be more than anticipated.

Deplying a test system of 3 machines can be a LOT different than deploying a live system with 30.

Even large companies can have problems with upgrades and migrations unless they have the resources to completely double-up their systems (such as microsoft).

Microsoft can afford the hardware to create test systems AS their live systems, then simply flip the switch when they want to migrate, turning their live systems into junk or testing systems, and then replacing them with the old testing systems which become live.

Turbine can't afford that.
