Subject: If Decal won't show up ingame follow this guide:
1. Get all your decal/dependant files and plug-ins downloaded.

2. Download RegCool. You can find it on Google.com.

3. Uninstall all of the plug-ins and dependencies + your decal and plug-ins.
(Be sure to delete the folders created by them usually in C:\Program Files\.)

4. Install RegCool.

5. Run RegCool.

6. Open RegCool and go to the "Edit" drop down menu and choose "Search". A new window will appear.

7. Check all the boxes on the top left area. The ones labeled "HKEY_.........." or just check "Root Node" bubble.

8. Once you do that, goto right below that area, and find and check "Keys/Value/Data".

9. In the bottom search box, type in "Decal".

10. Hit "Search Now".

11. When it finishes, you should see a bunch of stuff relating to the registry and decal on the right. If you do… continue to step 12.

12. Go back to the "Edit" drop down menu on the top of that search window, and select in the drop down "Select All".

13. Go to the "File" drop down menu and choose "Delete". It will delete them all. (You have now just deleted everything needed for decal in the registry.)

14. Now, close RegCool program.

15. Restart your computer.

16. Now install all the dependency files/programs for decal. (Not the plug-in)

Example for Decal and LifetankX what you will need to have:
.NET 2.0 Framework
D3DX Redistribution
MS Script 5.6
MS XML 4.0

17. After you install and restart as the system asks you to do...go to step 18.

18. Install Decal and only decal first.

19. Run Decal. Do an update with the "Update" button in decal.

20. If it updates without any errors, then move on to step 21.

21. Now Run Decal inside of AC. If it loads with the "Decal Hotkey system" in the top, you’re set to go!

22. Install 1 plug-in at a time, make sure it works then move on to next plug-in. I would take this time to configure each plug-in as needed to avoid conflict. Also on multiple characters if need be. For LifetankX I play 3 mages with it. I copy the Profile for my main toon I configured it on, then change the name to read whatever character of the 3 I playing.

23. Your set. I would keep this guide and RegCool installed. I am sure there is other Registry finding programs, but this one is free and works great.

Works for me, should work great for you. Enjoy!

Is there an option to "Backup" before you delete?

I wouldn't just go in and blindly delete anything that comes up in that program with just "Decal" as the search.

You're probably safe, but it is always safer to perform a backup first to make sure that you can restore if something goes seriously wrong.

99% of the time, if you uninstall a program correctly (using add/remove programs in the Control Panel) you should NOT have to fuss with your registry. As many programs as I've installed/uninstalled through the years, I have yet to need to use a 3rd party registry program.

I agree with Drakier ... blindly modifying anything using the term "decal" could be disastrous, as the term "decal" CAN be used in other programs for other things. If you cannot backup the registry prior to using this program, I'd advise against using it - especially if you don't know what you are doing, and what you're looking for happy

Omg let me get that edited! I guess the Decal uninstaller cannot find all the keys it installs.

I guess "trying" to help people out is a bad thing on these boards.

This was my method, and it worked fine.

I know removing Decal's registry entrys MIGHT make your Windows not operate!!! shock

Oh and whatever you do, don't blame decal for your problems either, it is perfect and if it's got bugs it's cause it's in alpha.

I guess thats why we even posted this message in the first place? wink

Make a better un-installer devs. happy

Have fun with this guide, tear it apart guys. Even make remarks of trusting someone who has an attitude towards things like this. grin

Seriously. (Sarcasm Off)

Get a life Draiker. Tell me how it will break windows seriously! TELL ME.

why are you being so hostile? go back and read what the replies actually say.

it's always a good idea to make a backup before irretrievably deleting something, unless you're absolutely sure that what you're deleting really is unneeded. a developer or support professional might be sure, but your average end-user usually is not. remember, the word "decal" wasn't invented for a third-party plugin system for AC, and it's not trademarked either. anybody can use the term for anything; it's entirely possible that some other company has a registry entry with the word "Decal" in it that's not related to Decal for Asheron's Call at all.

for example, UT2003 includes a "Decals" setting in its .ini file. it's not unreasonable to assume that some other game might store a similar setting in the registry rather than in a file, and your instructions might cause that other game to stop working.

the fact that this procedure worked well for you means only that you don't have any other software that needs any "Decal" registry entries (or that if you do, you haven't discovered the problem yet). I'd say the risk of this procedure causing Windows not to operate is pretty low. in any event, backing up the registry entries wouldn't help in that case anyway -- if Windows won't operate you won't be able to restore them, so you would be sunk regardless.

here's a more concrete examples of the problems your instructions could cause if followed blindly. you may or may not be aware that I've written some tools that allow you to manipulate the AC dat files (cell.dat/portal.dat). these tools are not decal-related, and they do not require decal in order for them to work. one common use of them is to convert a new-style AC:ToD cell.dat into an old-style AC:DM cell.dat so that older (non-decal-related) tools like AC Explorer will continue to work.

early versions of these tools used a DLL that I called "CommonObjects.dll"; this DLL included various useful things, such as functions to read values from a byte array, data structures like queues, stacks and trees, and program profiling tools that were useful for debugging and performance tuning. for historical reasons, the default installation directory for CommonObjects.dll was "C:\Program Files\DecalCOM\", even though this particular DLL was not Decal-related.

anybody who followed your instructions, and who was using one of these versions, just lost the use of it. they could reinstall Decal and all their plugins all day long, and that wouldn't make CommonObjects.dll work again. and without that DLL, nothing that depends on it would work either.

Registry editing should only be attempted by people who know exactly what they're doing or are being instructed by someone else who does.

Backing up is always good but if someone out there feels like they made a mistake, Windows XP has a System Restore feature. It has to be on *before* you make a mistake and it is better to simply not make mistakes but it will allow you to roll back to an earlier version of your registry.

Yeah it's called "Technology". Yes people, we have moved on from those old days. System Restore is that great part of the little thing called... "Technology".

You can backup all ya want, all these people saying "Back it all up before you..." but I see NO INSTRUCTIONS on how to do that! wink

MOVE ALONG TROLLS. Ty Kyuzo.

Heaven forbid you NOT be an ass, and actually have edited your guide to include a simple "use at your own risk - be sure to backup before messing with registry" disclaimer.

People who do not know how to back things up have no business doing anything in the system registry.

Wow...

hostility much?

I wasn't trying to be mean or anything. I was simply asking a question, then providing a context for my question.

I wanted to know if that software contained an option for "Backup". Then I proceeded to explain WHY a backup is important.

seriously... *shakes head*

it's not like I'm following you around specifically and posting on YOUR threads... you aren't that special.

I saw a thread and felt the information needed a little clarification and alteration.. to be honest, I didn't even know it was your thread until you started spouting off at me.

So you can take your attitude and hostility and check it at the door. I don't single you out or troll your posts. I was just posting to a thread here as I alwasy do. It just happened to be your thread this time.. whoop di do
